The problem isn't reading the water for obstructions so much as it is that there is lots of it all spread out across the channel with very small gaps between it to allow a boat to easily pass. You will be able to see the big chunks of concrete and twisted steel for the most part as it sticks out of the water. Not enough room I believe to get a boat up on plane in any event. I've got a small Jon boat with a small outboard and I wouldn't take it there. But that's just my opinion. I know you have lots of experience running the Trinity so maybe you won't think it's that bad. Just hate for ya to drive 2 hours and spend the gas money to find out the hard way. I haven't been lately and there is more flow now with the generating from Whitney, so it may be doable for you.
I'll second RBR's opinion about it not being that nice a place as far as taking the Mrs. I don't think I'd leave my vehicle there unattended at night, either. Had an unpleasant encounter with a unsavory character there. So just be aware
