Have any of you guys ever used the boat ramp near Marlin, Texas? I don't care about getting your fishing spots or anything like that, just curious about the quality of the ramp since it is a few hours from me. I have a Kayak and a power boat, I would prefer to use my power boat but I do want to get the wife somewhere nice with our kayaks at some point as well.
Thanks

Yep, I don't think you'd want to take your power boat, though I have seen folks in small boats. Lots of steel and concrete rubble from the old bridge. Depending on the flows it can be quite a workout in a kayak if you are planning on paddling down then back up or vice versa. The flows will fluctuate quite a bit with the daily generating from Lake Whitney.

The ramp at HWY 7 is dirt and there is plenty of rubble around to tear a boat up. Although with some care it can be negotiated.

The boat ramp at FM 712 (the Falls) is concrete but fairly steep. You need to be careful not to go downstream from the ramp as the river drops about 2 feet straight down and then another couple of feet in the next hundred yards or so.
It is possible to put a kayak in above or below the falls. But a PB would only go above.
There is a small campground there at the Falls.
Got to Google maps and you can see what I am talking about.

If you are wanting to go someplace nice, this is not it.

Well I would probably only take my PB up from the parks and wildlife ramp. I can run about 6" of water. I am familiar with reading water for debris from my experience on the trinity around 287 and fm 85. You know of anywhere with decent sand bars for camping or whatever within a couple miles up or down? My wife is not really girly girl, hard work won't be an issue. PM me if not wanting to throw this type of stuff out in open, and again I am not asking for fishing spots.

The problem isn't reading the water for obstructions so much as it is that there is lots of it all spread out across the channel with very small gaps between it to allow a boat to easily pass. You will be able to see the big chunks of concrete and twisted steel for the most part as it sticks out of the water. Not enough room I believe to get a boat up on plane in any event. I've got a small Jon boat with a small outboard and I wouldn't take it there. But that's just my opinion. I know you have lots of experience running the Trinity so maybe you won't think it's that bad. Just hate for ya to drive 2 hours and spend the gas money to find out the hard way. I haven't been lately and there is more flow now with the generating from Whitney, so it may be doable for you.

I'll second RBR's opinion about it not being that nice a place as far as taking the Mrs. I don't think I'd leave my vehicle there unattended at night, either. Had an unpleasant encounter with a unsavory character there. So just be aware slinger

I always figured prisoners would leave the prison area, lickety split.

Tyler State Park is real nice for kayaks. The Marlin area is not where I would go. If you are looking in that area maybe Ft Parker SP.
