Breaking your line on the hook set or even your rod?

That was a good read. Not much fun in sking a 10# Falcon Bass to the boat and into the net; but that's how you don't loose them.

Sounds great, unless its an 8lber buried in the reeds- Setting the hook hard I believe is productive if the fish is buried in cover and you have the proper equiptment- A shakey head with 12lb test, for example, this rings true- Great read

interesting although he did not mention the role a properly set drag can play. if your drag is set right, you should be able to swing for the fences every time.

Thats a good read. I've been pitching and flipping more this year than ever. I love hand to hand combat with these fish. I've lost more big fish this year than ever. Some when I was using a Palomar knot with fluorocarbon. Others without reeling up all the slack in my line before whackin him. I'm always afraid he'll spit the hook before I can reel down.

+1

most break off are caused by bad knots and bad line. Plus" I have never broken one off" .....hmmm

When I break off on hook set its always the 1st good thump of the day. I get all excited and slam that big Falcon with to much foot/pounds per sq inch. You would think that # 65 pound braid would not snap so easy but it does. Happened yesterday, fish hit the jig way fast and set the hook with my thumb on the spool (I keep my drag loose and tighten after I pull her outta the slop).

Thanks for posting this topic

The only time I break off on the hook set is when I am using a high dollar brand name tungsten weight. I have never broken off a fish during a wave producing hook set with a jig.
