Guy caught this in a pond in California. I've seen redtails caught on River Monsters, but wasn't aware they could survive in North America. Wicked looking fish.

I think they have one in the aquarium at Cabellas in Ft Worth, so I guess they will make it in fresh water, it would be awsome to catch one though!

They could get that big in 1.5 years from a 3" baby easily. Probably outgrew someones tank and they released it late enough in the year so the water temps would support it for a few months. I've had them in aquariums in the past and they put on an easy 3" a month if well fed. I've had friends that had theirs put on up to 5" in a month.

It's a freshwater fish native to South American rivers. Max size is around 120-150lbs.

Truth. Anything for more then a day or so in water temps below 68 will wipe them out. Similar odd catches have been at Grapevine Lake where there is a Red Belly Pacu lake record...another fish indigenous to South American rivers.

I almost got a pacu in brackenridge park. I bet that red tail ate a ton of fish before he was caught. I heard they're not good to eat like the meat is black? I might me making that up though.
