My poor dog had to get his nuts cut out today so I decided to do some fishing at lake Conroe to kill time until I had to pick him up. Bite was slower than usual but still caught some nice fat fish, and a solid 2 pound bass. Also got to feed a great blue heron, mainly to avoid being stabbed to death by him lol. He had been sitting in one spot for an hour trying to get a fish with no luck. I guess once he noticed me fishing he flew over and hung out by me, next fish I caught he started coming at me with intent so I quickly threw him the 8-9" gill which he held for a minute then swallowed the damn thing whole!! Cool experience, anyways here's the pics...

Nice gill. Sorry about your dog's nuts.

That would really suck.

WTG Peyton! cheers Nice slabs for sure! Nice to see Conroe and EasTex getting represented. How do you like those crickets? How do you like the rod so far. Sorry if you've already answered, might've overlooked it. Those Conroe 'gills and shellcrackers can get big quick. Finding them is the hardest part for this time of the year.

Nice fat fish. What type of lure were you using? Love the pics.

Thanks everyone!!

And the dog is doing great, he was loopy for awhile yesterday from the anesthesia but he's back to his old self now thumb

Chuck if/when you do come out to Conroe be sure to let me know so I can join ya!

jagg the artifical cricket like plastics have actually been working really well, better than the other plastics/lures I was trying that day. Also I love the rod! I don't think I could fish open water without it, the extra length makes a world of difference!

dhogdog they're a soft plastic made by Big Bite Baits that kind of looks like a cricket. Here's a link to one of my other Conroe posts and if you scroll down a bit I posted some info on em and a picture! http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/7401997/Re_Conroe_Pigfest#Post7401997

Lake Conroe is rated the #1 spot for large bluegills in Texas.

Will be giving you a call for sure when I head up that direction. You are nailing some super fish out of that lake. Come to think of it you have been getting some nice fish in that whole Houston area. Keep up the good work and keep posting those super catches. hooked

Side Note. Glad the dog is doing well! dance2

Thanks again Chuck and looking forward to it!

drrouter I know at one time Conroe definitely was top for bluegills but I have a hard time believing that now, although I know it's still way up there at the top. With the massive population of grass carp and the TONS and TONS and TONS of stump fields that have been cut to make the lake safer for the PWC owners the average size and population has gone down. Out of all the times I've fished Conroe I still have not been able to get a bluegill that's 10"+. That use to be nothing for Conroe. I know they're still in there but just alot harder to find it seems. A 12.5" was caught not too long ago so that still gives me hope. Toledo Bend is also known for massive bluegill which I haven't been able to experience yet but hopefully I can sometime this year. But if I remember right I've been hearing that TB also isn't at good as it once was. I think TB and Conroe are probably neck and neck as far as bluegills go, but then you've also got LBL and Dunlap so who knows. Conroe definitely is still one of the top spots and I love that place!

I would have to put Conroe up there. As for huge Blue Gills Calaveras has to be close to the top as for San Antonio area lakes. You also have to include Lady Bird Lake in Austin which has had some super huge Blue Gills caught over this past year. thumb
