I took the kids out to Trinity Park in Fort Worth yesterday evening to do a little bluegill fishing. Me and my son had been out to the same spot a few days earlier and caught quite a few nice sized bluegills including a small bass. They weren't interested in biting yesterday but my son did manage to catch what I believe is a warmouth. We're new to fishing and it's the first time we've come across one of these. I was using my ultralight setup, a tiny Pflueger President reel (I got it on clearance at Bass Pro) mounted on a Quantum Xtralite rod with 6lb braided line. I really enjoy catching sunfish on tiny crankbaits. As we were getting ready to leave I decided to test a small lipless crankbait that I pulled out of a bargain bin somewhere. I cast it out into the rushing water opposite where we were fishing for sunfish. Something grabbed my lure. It was heavy and fighting hard. I adjusted the drag and whatever it was started peeling line off my reel like crazy. I yelled at my son to grab the fish grippers. After a good hard fight I managed to pull the fish to the surface. It was my first ever catfish. It wasn't a huge fish, at least compared to some of the photos I've seen in the catfish section of this forum, but it's the biggest fish I've ever caught. I didn't realize until I snapped the photos that we had grabbed the fish by the upper lip. Hopefully we didn't injure him. Some guy who had just arrived to do some fishing walked up and took a couple of photos. He told me that it was a yellow catfish (flathead?). Since you're not supposed to eat fish from the Trinity, he was released to live a long and fruitful life. I enjoyed the fight and have a new found confidence in my ultralight gear. I might start targeting catfish.

Nice Flatty. Those fish can get Huge. Some of the really big ones can get over 100 pounds. Those fish can put up a super fight.

Awesome job! I know the feeling, the flathead in my signature was caught on 10 pound test while fishing for perch with nightcrawlers. It's definitely an adrenaline rush!
