Just started having an issue with my 898 randomly powering off. Here are the steps that I have done (nothing has fixed issue) Already have done the "bending the pins to make better contact trick on the pwoer cable", getting 12.2 volts with motor not running at the battery and same at cable, over 14 volts when motor is running, cleaned contact pins on the power cable and unit itself. If you barely touch the power cable while it is plugged into the unit, it will turn off (with or without cable collector) all contections are solid and clean, reran power wires. I am wondering if it is the power cable of the unit itself. I dont have anyone around me that has a hummingbird that I could put my unit on their boat. Any ideas guys?

What does the unit voltage readout indicate?
You may need to replace the power cord IF you did the pin bending thing correctly.

I have the same problem with a 998. Awhile back I saw a guide post a problem about random shutdowns on his HB's. I have a feeling it is internal in the unit.

I would test on another boat to check power cable connections. If that don't resolve call HB Customer Service 800-633-1468

I had the same thing happen to me before I started useing a dedicated battery for all my electronics. I found I was useing too much power on my house battery and took the 2 SI units off. It only shut down twice on the water and I never had it happen again once I re-configured my power supply.

Not to highjack the thread but now I have an added issue. Im useing a AA power pack to power up my 898 and 998 units at home for updates and waypoint managment and both of them do a controled shut down from time to time while useing the power pack. Im thinking that when the battery get to a specified draw down level the unit reads it and shuts down. But it does this way before the battery is dead. Anybody else using a battery pack and have this happen?

THe AA Battery Power Pack is designed to update the smaller units like 500 and 700 Series Units.

I would build a AC/DC Power Supply or use the powercord and a larger battery at home.

Update: Replacing the power cord assembly fixed the problem.

I will need to try that on my 500 series. I have the same issue. The funny thing is that they guy I bought the boat from said he never had it happen to him. I haven't gotten more than 40 minutes out of mine since January without it powering down. I couldn't get it to stay on for more than a minute or two at a time yesterday.
