OK, my 20 yr old daughter thinks I should get a Facebook account to keep up with all my classmates, friends, etc.
I have mixed reactions to Facebook. Somedays I think, OK, other days I say, "No Thanks." As of right now, I don't have a Facebook account.

Question: Who all on here has a Facebook page?

And "why" if you do or don't?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I'm kinda the odd ball in my generation. I'm 22. And while I have a Facebook page, I only check it maybe 4 times a year. I have absolutely no desire. I only get on when somebody tells me I need to. Like a friend had a baby or something

Off the top of my head, a couple reasons why not:

1) computer security; viruses, malware, etc is too common on social networking sites.

2) identity theft. Facebook, Myspace and similar sites make it too easy from criminals to gather information on potential targets.

Depends on what you put on there. The only thing you are required to put in is a name and email. Which any indentity thief could get easily from any sight you register on, including this one.

As far as viruses. I can agree with that. But a good anti virus and malware blocker, as well as not clicking strange links will take care of a lot of that.

I have a FB page. Mainly to keep up with my kids. I Went overboard on "people from school and past" Several people got unfriended due to various reasons. Just like a lot of forums it is drama driven or drivel.

Both of those are easily avoidable.

Don't click on links or download "apps" "games" or anything like that.

And restrict the info you put out there.

It is a good tool for keeping up with people you don't see very often. Family, friends from school, friends that move away, etc.

I dont and dont see the point. Who really gives a ratz azz about anyone else's daily activities? Seems pretty vain to me. It's more fun to BS on the TFF and other forums than to post every minute of your daily activities on FB. If I were a 14 yr old girl I might feel different.

Which is why I check in once a week or less.
Always log off before leaving or it slows my computer way down.
I've ignored many friend requests, my loss I guess. grin
I keep my friends at 100 or less, even de-friended several who post ad-nauseum. cheers

I started my page years ago because our church used it as a communication tool. But shortly thereafter I started reconnecting with lots of old friends from my high school days (graduated in 1963), some of whom I hadn't seen for many years. Because of that we have started having monthly lunches and have rekindled some great old friendships.

Like Bill said above, just don't play the games , download the apps or click on links. Same rules that apply to any other website.

Have one, but have kept friends down to 100. It's a good way to keep up with the family and close friends you can't see often. As far as viruses and such, never had one from there. Same rules apply everywhere on the internet. Don't be stupid and you won't get viruses. You're also more likely to suffer identity theft from normal use of credit cards/email and not disposing of snail-mail properly.

I have one and have hooked up with some old school mates I haven't seen or talked to in 40 years!

I check my Facebook maybe once a week, post very little, and can't see anyone stealing anymore info off of it than they can here.

I kept getting crashes and lockups when on fb, none since I got rid of it. also be aware they will sell your info to the ad people who in turn will spam anyone you friend and it will only get worse when they do the ipo

They can only get the info you put on it. It is graet for keeping up with the grand kids. I think the problem is people just take it too seriously. It should be fun.

I have one. I limit my friends list to the people I trust. For our family FB is a good tool to organize events. Every year most of the men in our family take off on a guys only weekend. We create an event(usually 8-10 months in advance), post it and see who is in. Go from there, make cabin reservations, boat reservations, etc.
Last September we went to Mena Arkansas four wheeling, great trip.

Every bit of information about us is for sale, the only thing that we can do is limit the amount of information we are willing to give out. In the digital world, if someone really wants your info-they will get it. It is what it is. I used a cc on a trip to Central America, when we got home said cc had been used to buy stuff at a Wal-Mart in Houston. I haven't been to Houston in years. Thankfully our cc company caught it.

I'm very grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with my classmates and distant relatives. I'm suprised how often I check facebook, but I do it because I want to, not because I feel I have to.

You have the option to filter facebook and friend who you want to friend, it's an experience you choose and you choose to manage.

I have one for friends and one for family. It's great to keep up with my friends from school and my nieces, nephews and cousins. With my uncle being in the hospital and not wanting to talk (it wears him down), it's been great to keep everyone up to date on how he's doing. I don't have any information on there that the people on my pages don't already know and I keep it locked down on who can view what.

I appreciate the responses guys! I can see where FB would be great for keeping up with relatives. I am kind of a social outcast and not so sure I want to re-connect with all the people I went to school with.

And it seems that most of my graduating class are "friending" each other on FB. I did receive an email from an old classmate who wanted to know "why aren't you on FB? People want to re-connect with you."

If you group your friends, it is a very easy way to tune out people, and only keep up with what you are interested in.

I do not install apps or play the games.

It seems that many Facebook users routinely post lots of personal information, including full names, addresses and so forth, and then give realtime updates when they leave on an extended vacation so the bad guys know the home is unguarded ... maybe the problem isn't the format of social networking sites and has more to do with the poor judgment of the users?

One major problem with using social networking sites is that employers (and government!) monitor them and will use what you post in making hiring and firing decisions. When a person gets turned down for a job because of those college spring break photos from four years ago ... well, it ain't fun. Once posted, some of that material never completely goes away.

Has one...uses it to keep up with family....that way I do not have to actually talk to any of them.

All of my family that I want to "connect" with live within a hour of us.

but, yeppers, I have an account, and actually check it religiously at least 3 times a year! or, when someone calls on the telephone (remember those days?) to tell me, "Hey, check out my Facebook post, its funny!" sheesh...why don't you tell me when we are on the phone?

Ha! I would get rid of it if I could. But I am an IT guy so I get directives from the boss (wifey) to stay in touch, an e-mail to send all bulloney mail to and one for real people. The bulloney e-mail is for facebook so my wife can see our kid's pictures, etc. I would like to delete it but it does serve one purpose. Business' have to have a web site these days, sometimes leads to social networking sites too.

What a pain. wink

How many friends do you have on facebook? How many real friends do you have? I would just stay in touch with the real friends.

[quote=OldFrog]I dont and dont see the point. Who really gives a ratz azz about anyone else's daily activities? Seems pretty vain to me. It's more fun to BS on the TFF and other forums than to post every minute of your daily activities on FB. If I were a 14 yr old girl I might feel different. [/D

If you get on Facebook and look for drama and trouble you will probably find it. If you control who you friend and what you post it can a great way to stay in touch with people. Past that I think the folks with little self control are usually the ones that have issues.

I have a FB account and check it daily. I've reconnected with many friends from the past, and I like that. But, you have to be careful of what information you put out there. Also, be careful of what you say with your name on it. "Things on the internet are written in ink, not pencil."

I used to have a Myspace account, but rarely checked it. I have not, and will not ever have a FB account. I learned through myspace that every dayum moron that I went to high school with wanted to "friend" me. We weren't friends in high school, we aren't firends now, and there is a reason that you don't have my phone number or email address. that reason is that I don't like you. Never have, never will. One of my very best friends is on FB, and he is always telling me that someone from HS wants to get in touch with me. He knows the standard answer by now, and tells them, "when he wants to talk to you, he will get in touch with you. hold your breath."
I did get laid once with an ex GF thanks to myspace, so it can't be THAT bad, but I'm married now, so no need for FB. Or is there a need......

Hey there SK....by the way..it's customary in the OT, when referring to females, that you post a photo or two of said females to give us a better understanding of your post. smile

We dont talk about "feesh" in here, unless it's about eating baby bass or sows caught on an Alabama rig or waterdog.

Hey everyone, Thank You for weighing in with your opinions about this Facebook thread I started! I appreciate all of the posts. cheers

For now, I am still holding off on setting up a FB account mainly because I don't want to mess with it. I have too much fun here in the OT and am afraid a FB account would take away my "OT time". thumb

I got one, friends with several on here.

As long as you don't click weird links and the stupid games the old people play Facebook is fine. And depending how paranoid you are you can set it all the way to where people can't even look you up.

I find it very useful for keeping up with those old friends or acquaintances you don't really talk to anymore but still want to "know". Its enabled me to keep in touch with several teachers from school and other people I would have likely lost touch with. I hardly ever post on it, but I message people alot. It is also great for musicians, artists etc. But for posting what your doing every second of the day, that's BS, no one cares, I hate those people.

I have one wife has one.. I look at mine maybe 3 times a week or so or if my phone goes off about something that is important i will look. Wife has started using it as invatations for the kids birthday parties etc. Saves stamps and they can say if they are coming or not right there so we can get a good count. I ran across some old friends and we continue to get together for lunch and stuff that was only possible because of FB. Ran across some old Flames that i glad never worked out.
