Saturday I made a trip to lake Somerville to investigate the creeks and see if any whitebass might have crossed the shallow flats at the upper end when it flooded last week. The lake has come up almost 4 feet since mid January but still remains at just over six feet below normal pool level. Read the report and see the video.

Man that's disappointing. I really thought it might be up more than that. Maybe we'll get enough this weekend to bring it up but how long do you think the whites will take to come up in the creeks before they just decide to spawn in the main lake?
Based on years past the whitebass will head up the creeks anytime they can until about mid April. That's what happened in 2009. The lake was about 4 feet low and then it poured about 10 inches of rain all at once that brought the lake to near pool level. I didn't know the whitebass would wait that long and I think the vast majority has already spawned in the open lake but lots of them went up the Yegua anyway. Most everyone that knows the Yegua and fishes it thought the run was over and had moved on to other fishing but those of us that fished the creek through April and May learned otherwise.. As of Friday 17feb2012 the lake is at 232.21 and I suspect we need at least another two feet rise or more before the whitebass will move into the creeks in mass.. I hope I'm wrong or that we get the needed rain..
Here's the data for April 2009 showing the three foot rise from the 10 inch rain.

OK. So we have had 2.31 inches of rain since yesterday afternoon. 1.45 inches fell this morning around 4am. Should bring the lake level up quite a bit. I would imaging the creeks will be running strong and should connect to the lake. See this from the weather service this morning:
Flood Warning for the middle yegua creek near Dime Box. * From this afternoon to late Tuesday night... or until the warning is cancelled. * At 0615 am Saturday the stage was 6.6 feet. * Minor flooding is forecast. * Flood stage is 10.0 feet. * Forecast... rise above flood stage by late this afternoon and continue to rise to near 11.6 feet by tomorrow evening. The river will fall below flood stage by Tuesday early afternoon. * At 10.0 feet... FM 141 below the confluence with west yegua creek is threatened and backwater flooding up west yegua and Turkey creeks in Lee County is likely.

Saturday February 18, 2012 with several days and inches of rain on already soaked ground the flood water has begun to make it's way to Lake Somerville. This is welcome news for all the springtime whitebass fisherman as this flood water raises the lake to near normal levels allowing the whitebass to enter the creeks to spawn. The staff at Lake Somerville State Park & Trailway is preparing for the onslaught of fisherman from near and far seeking to participate in this annual event. Cedar, Nails and Yegua creeks are by far the most productive and all have miles of fish-able bank located in the state park. Entry into the state park is $3.00 per person, per day, and as long as you are fishing from land within the state park you do not need a fishing license. State limits apply, 10 inch minimum length for crappie and whitebass, 25 fish per day, per fisherman.
