I am a 90% saltwater fisher and the other 10% is to kill time until I can get down to the coast. I only go after bass but once in a while pull up some others. If these are crappie, they're my first. The white one was caught today. The black was a little while back.I thought crappie were small. These things were bass sized.

For reference, that is a size 12/13 flipflop. The flipflop measures just shy of 13" long and a little over 5" wide.

This white one was easily over 2lbs and 4 inches longer than the black one.

I guess I need to go google to see what a black one looks like. I saw there was a white and black on a list and assumed one was white and the other black since the color was so different.

The crappie that is darker in color is a white crappie. the reason it is darker in color is b/c of hormones prespawn and spawning males develope pretty dark colors. it only happens around the spawn and they return back to lighter colors after the spawn. a true black crappie has a black circular ring type pattern and bigger eyes, the dorsal fin is also differnt.

When male crappie spawn, or get ready to, they get dark.

To whom it may concern:
The male crappie does not SPAWN.He does not have eggs to to distribute.Only FEMALES spawn. Thus they are called spawners of the species. The male prepairs the nest for the Females and protects the eggs after they are fertilized by him. When the male becomes darker he is at his most fertile. He has a role to play in the spawn but he himself does`nt spawn.JMTC

In the spring time, white male crappie turn black from the spawn and look like black crappie but if you count dorsal fin spines, white crappie never have more than 6 dorsal fin spines and blacks have 7 to 8. If your not familiar with them, that's the sure fire way to tell...

No need to pay. The bigger crappie was pulled out of a public park but the smaller one would require you to be a resident or accompanied by a resident of Cinco Ranch. PM when you'll be on my side of town and I'll put you on fish.

The 'public park' looks like the water behind La Centera? If not, where is it? I would really like to find the crappie. I live in Firethorne..we have a few ponds stocked with Bass (Florida Hybrid) and perch but no crappie.

Thanks for the info!

The darker one was caught at La Centerra, hence the need to be a Cinco resident to fish but I'm sure many of the fishers aren't residents. As long as they catch and release, what do I care.

They don't care if your a resident or not. I was once parked in the grass by the pond next to the apartment complex and had a Fort Bend cop pull in and talk to me. He asked if I was a resident and I told him I wasn't and he said that didn't matter I just couldn't park there. He even asked how the fishing was.
