0.0% is what I consider a good rate.

In other words, pay cash. They hate it because that's where they make their money, but they will sell you a car for cash money.

Get your financing from someone else before going in.

ok, let me rephrase.

if you had to finance through a dealership, what would you consider a decent interest rate?

But I'd hold out for a 0% offer

Please be careful.

The car dealership will make all kinds of promises, do this or do that to get you to finance with their in house financing company. That is not because doing so is to YOUR benefit.

Have financing done before you go to the dealer. Get your best deal, and then finance it thru your credit union or whatever.

0% means you don't get the rebates, and its best to take the rebate money. Not to mention there is absolutely no such thing as a 0% interest rate. It may be advertised as 0% but you can bet your arse the interest is going to be made up in other BS fees.

These days thats not always true. A lot of people can walk into a bank like chase or wells and might be told a rate 2-3% better than I can get them at the same bank.

Can't speak for TX Motorcars, but most big-box dealerships will take every angle they know to suck your blood! (extended warranty, financing, death insurance, add-on options, lease penalties, sticker price negotiations against applied factory rebate, yada, yada, yada!

The add-on option sales girl at the Honda dealership we bought from is a money making machine, (mudflaps, window tinting, floor mats, chrome applique goodies, body side molding, trailer hitch, special rear-view mirrors, customized seat-belt covers, undercoating, window tinting, paint sealants, etc. She flips thru an options cataloque the size of a small town phonebook with evey customer....cha-ching!! whip

If you hit up Automax, they'll sell you a suh-weeeet '97 Ford Escort with 121k on a 7-year note for the low low rate of 17.99 percent. Can't go wrong with that deal.

Your right, a lot of dealerships make more money on the financing than the car. We are not one of those dealerships. All I offer is GAP, and warranties.

New or used?

New car interest rates are usually subsidized by the manufacturers finance arm, so zero percent up to maybe 2.9% would be good on a new car rate. Used cars I would expect to see 1.9% to 4.9% for someone with good credit, depending on how much down payment you were paying.

If they want more than 5%, tell them you're leaving

BS fees aren't interest. And he didn't ask for "the best deal to pay the least amount of money over the life of the loan", he asked for "a good interest rate."

Interest is a fee paid every month based on a percentage. It's the way the finance company makes money, and a finance company isn't going to extend a loan for free, so they will make it up in other fees. So yes other fees, in this case, take the place of interest.

If you have good credit you are usually better off taking the rebates and finding your own financing. In other words don't take the 0% offers.

I bought a truck from Monte last October. I got 2.4% from my local credit union going through Moritz. That was cheap enough money for me.

I usually bargain for the best deal since the dealership will go lower on price if they think they are going to make it up in financing then I go finance it through my credit union to get the best rate. Win, win.

If rebates were always the better deal, that's all they'd offer. For expensive cars, the 0% can be a much better deal than the rebates.

Also, not all dealerships offer in-house financing anymore. My brother is a car salesman and they just have a list of lenders that they use for trying to get buyers financed. Of course, if it's a new car, your best bet is probably to get one of the manufactuer-subsidized low rates.

As some other guy said, I think 0-3 percent is good for new cars, and 2-5 percent is good for used cars. Anything higher than 5 percent means you should look somewhere else or your credit is questionable.

The biggest thing to consider is how long your going to have the vehicle or how long you plan on making payments on it. Lost count of how many ignorant people i sold cars to that took the 0% and then payed the car off in 2 years. Take the rebates and don't pay above 3%. Also depending on your down payment the GAP insurance will also be a waste of money.

If you don't have the money to pay cash, you get hosed.

If you can't afford a brand new set of wheels, you likely will screw up on payments if any type of life event happens and lose the vehicle while tanking your credit.

Pay cash and drive what you can afford. Do you really have to have a brand new shiny set of wheels?

I drive a 92 Silverado that I own free and clear. My wife drives a 97 Cherokee that we own free and clear. Everybody else on our block drives a payment.

Sorry to the salesmen here. Just calling it like I see it.

I will pick up my new truck today and I received 1.9% on my new truck through the dealer. It was better than my credit union.
