I have a boat just like this but its an 84 model, sea nymph, sc170. it is rated for 100 horsepower. I have a 150 mariner magnum that im thinking abt putting on it. Im wondering if this boat could take the weight of the 150, as long as im easy on the throttle. anyone know what a mariner 150 2 stroke weighs? http://www.campandcruise.com/pre_owned_detail.asp?veh=2222915

Google it, can't remember the site but there is one with motor weights and other related info. I know boats are rated with a rather generous safety margin built in, but that's all I'm gonna say about that.

its rated for 100, but they used to make motors huge and heavier, I had an 85 horse chrysler that was huge, and had to weigh over 400 lbs, on a little 15 ft skeeter. I have a 70 hp rude on the sea nymph now, and its like nothing is on the back.

overhorsepowering a boat is never a good idea it would be very hard to get insurance an if you had an accident there would be a lot of liability .

sell the 150 and buy a newer 100hp, don't go over the rated hp on it or you could have huge problems if soething did happen.

The motor should weigh about 385#.

Has Been pretty much nailed it on the weight. Most boats have a point at which adding more HP will not increase speed. You will probably be fine with the 150 provided you are not going to insure the boat, take it to a state that has regulations against over powering, or run in to a Coast Guard check. The mounting holes might be different too. How to prop it might be an issue also.

Oh and one other thing. How the transom handles the torque and power might be bigger than the weight.

I have had several boats with motors that exceeded the max hp. sticker on the boat and have never had any problem with the legality of the boat or with obtaining insurance on the boat. I have had a lot of fun with them, though.

Rig it and run it. No law in TX about putting whatever you want on whatever you've got.
And there's plenty of insurance companies that will be more than happy to cover it. Progressive for sure, there's others.
If you break it, get another one, it's just a toy.

I am right there with HasBen & Mr. Goff! Just take your time and take it easy so you can learn how to drive it with the new HP it will act like a totally different boat when you add 50% more HP!
