Lot of factors here with water color being the first thing imo. Crawfish colored baits seem to work good but other days shad colors work best. Bream colored baits work too. There really is no "best" color as different lakes seem to have different personalities and bait colors that work better.
Almost all lakes have a population of shad and crawfish. I usually start there and adjust the colors to time of year and water clarity, then if there is a specific bait, such as Tilapia, that has a good population on a specific lake then I will try to imitate that.

I like h20 and kvd 1.5 in shad color or chart/black in prespawn, once they move onto the beds I like the h20 wake bait in sexy shad or a norman fat boy in sun glo perch color.
Chartreuse/blue back or firetiger in muddy water and in cleaner water a red crawfish color. These are my prespawn gotos. During the spawn if I throw one it's a perch color.
I like the H20 Express crankbaits. Sexy shad squarebills work best for me.
This^^.. I really like the .5 (not sure what the h20 model# is) size in chartuese shad but the one that dives about 5-7 ft. deep. The smaller crankbaits really seem to produce well this time of year on the lakes I fish alot
