With the tax season upon us once again, I realized once I pay off my two cars I will have a bit left over after the rest goes into saving.

I want to buy a good water proof camera for my kayak (something with a remote) and something that I can mount to the front hatch of my Outback to take pictures of myself with all the neat fish I get to catch. I was looking at some of the Kodak waterproof camera and they all looked pretty neat along with I think the Yak Attack type mounts for them.

I was wondering what do all of you recomend? I mainly want a decent camera that is water proof, can maybe with stand the ocean salt, has a remote and I can rig it to mount on my kayak. Looking forward to what all of you have to say since I know a lot of you guys have some cool cameras and mounts for them.

GoPro HD Hero 2. It's coming this month with an available remote. If they can take the punishment of surfers in Hawaii they can handle an ol cat fisherman from Azle. Love my GoPro.

I have a Kodak Playsport too, got a bundle deal from Amazon that included the remote among other things.

Not sure if this is a positive or negative ...

http://bottomline.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/02/09/10362558-kodak-camera-moments-are-coming-to-an-end

Kodak just announced that they will stop making digital still and video cameras in the first half of this year. This may mean that you can expect some really good deals on existing inventory over the coming months, but may also mean that don't count on a great deal of customer support if you have problems. But honestly with the prices of these things today, I pretty much consider them disposable.

Kodak playsport-$100 Has good HD video and is ready to go.

Gopro hero naked-$190 Has great HD video but will need a case to make it water proof.

Gopro hero 2-$299 Has great HD video with wide angle lens and ready to go.

Good, better, best. Take your pick.

I think the Playsport was the one I was looking at since all I really want it for is taking pictures of what fish I catch. Hopefully it will take a nice picture when I mount it about 6ft or so from myself. When I read about Kodak stopping production of camera's I also thought they might clear prices on them soon. Going to have to hunt Amazon here in the next few weeks or so.

Now what about mounts? I was looking at yak attack equipment and it seems like they make a mount system for almost any camera, kinda of a one size fits all situation.

I have a piece of 3/4 inch PVC mounted to my crate. Dollar Tree has a mini-tripod that fits inside the pipe perfectly, snug and secure, although I added a little "goop" just to make sure. Works for me.

For a cheap camera that will take stills you can't go wrong with the playsport.
If you want to take real neat stills the Go Pro hero does a great job with its 170 degree f.o.v.. It also is great for capturing videos. If you want a remote with it you will need the Go Pro 2. It will be coming out with a remote in Febuary. But the Go Pro2 is like $100 more plus the remote I believe is like $70 more.
The Yak Attack Panfish, or the Panfish Portrait are two really great camera mounts to look at.
I will have all three cameras and all the mounts mentioned at the boat show with me. I'll show you all the pros and cons when you come visit us this weekend. wink

Got the camera, now I have a Q

What size card do you guys use, seems like a 16g 10 class sdhc card is sufficient, but am really thinking a 32g isnt overkill.... So What size are you guys using

I have a 8gig in my playsport and when set on 720 I get about 2.5 hours of video. When the card is full my battery is almost dead. I Thought about getting the bigger card but would need an extra battery to go with it.

So a 16 would be plenty, thanks....nothing more valuable than first hand experience.

I agree with all of the above. I have (2) Playsports on my yak and love them. Watch ebay and you can pick them up very reasonably. Get the Z3 not the new Z5. The Z3 has a removable battery so you can carry a spare. I bought my last PS Z3 last week on ebay for $22.50 + $10 S&H.

I have both and like my go pro better for pics

With the playsport you can have some issues getting the whole fish and you in the frame and low light isnt that great so sundown and sunrise pics can be a issue (of you not the sun)

With the go pro you can keep it closer to you and not 6 feet out and still get a better field of view to get the whole fish...

From what i was told the remote cant turn the playsport on just take photos so you would have to maneuver to turn on the camera first

with my go pro i just set it on time lapse at 10 seconds put it over the mount right in front of me pretty much at my feet and it will keep takign photos without having to press the button over and over its a time saver, well worth the price

I have 32gig card for my playsport, but no way the battery would last close enough to fill It up.

Thanks for all the info guys, this has given me a lot to think about. I am going to have to keep a eye on e-bay when the taxes come in. Than I'll have to figure out where on my outback I can rig ut without it getting in the way of any thing.
