You might want to read this most recent alert from the State Department dated today. Top of the page on the first website. http://www.google.com/search?aq=f&so...t+travel+alerts

The point of my post is this. I'd much rather travel into Mexico on Lake Amistad and Falcon Lake where there is a concentrated and heavy military presence, than drive across ANY point and into that country right now.
Go by water or don't go! NO highway into the interior of that country is safe right now. Especially for Gringos in SUV's. Election year and things are already heating up.

Speak of the devil, I'm going next week. From Nogales by dark truck, but during the day. Wish me luck, looking to get my first DD still. If I do, the first round is on me. Besides, the safest place to be is in the middle of the Lord's will.

HEAVY military presence at Falcon and Amistad? Really? I'm not doubting you but the word "heavy" implies full reinforcement present. Is that truly the case? I'm asking because I didnt know this. Also, I don't think suggesting stepping into Mexico by land or water that one is safer than the other. Mexico is Mexico and it has it's dangers regardless how you get there (walk, boat or drive) and how far in you go doesn't matter.. I do agree some places have more risk but violence occurs on water and land regardless just as the couple on the jet ski experienced. An angler/visitor needs to FIRST decide whether they want to go into Mexico knowing its all Mexico. I have traveled into Colombia, Venezuela, Honduras, and Nicaragua and they all have their issues and concerns. I know some of these are on the do not travel list by our gov. Regardless how you get in here it's still up to the persons discretion if they want to enter in the first place and how far in you want to go really doesn't matter at that point...your in once you step foot inside those countries.

I was going to go on a mission trip to Mexico with my Church, but they decdied to change it to Joplin Missouri, due to the amout of problems or dangers going on down in Mexico.
Either way were still doing some good.

Regardless how you get in here it's still up to the persons discretion if they want to enter in the first place and how far in you want to go really doesn't matter at that point...your in once you step foot inside those countries. Huh? I don't know where your definition of heavy military presence means "full reinforcements present" comes from. Would you care to explain? What it does mean in Mexico south of Zapata is that the cartels no longer have free and open reign. There is a military presence that has control over the area. It does not mean that it is totally safe, but it does mean it is safer than it has been in the recent past. In these areas the cartels are not free to openly control towns, perform road blocks and checkpoints, etc. If you are a cartel guy and you come out in the open you will be in more danger of getting killed than a US tourist. Again, it doesn't mean it is safe, it does mean it is safer than it was a couple of years ago. As for it makes no difference whether you travel in Mexico by land or sea -- are you kidding me? Cartels do not live on the lake. They do not meet, drink, or hangout in boats on the lake. Yes, they do run drugs and guns across the lake but when they do that they are doing it secretly and in a hurry to avoid being captured or killed. That's why it is a good idea to stay off of the lake at night. I wish we would be a little more thoughtful of what we put out on this subject and not act like we are experts on the subject by virtue of travelling on occasion outside of the country.

The reason I posted this new travel alert last night. There was someone on here a week or two ago talking about it being safe to cross into the State of Sonora at Nogales. If you will read the second paragraph in the alert, you will see those places mentioned as not being safe for travel.
I have no fear of fishing the Mexican side of Falcon. The Marines have control of that area of Tamaulipas. I'm not saying Mexico is safe, by any means. But I would feel much safer on the water in Mexico than driving into the interior.
This is why I posted the new alert.
You make your own decision if it is safe or not.

I know I have been making light of it but I totally agree with ya Fouz. We are headed to Falcon Sun till Wed. I personally would not go into Mexico by land. Its just too risky for me. We do plan on fishing the Mexico side of Falcon. Will keep our eyes open but like you said I feel comfortable with that decision to fish the Falcon Mexico side and plan on having some fun. The weather looks to be clearing up and warming up on Sun at Falcon so it will be a nice change for us. It snowed here on Mon and looks like snow and rain the rest of the week here so looking forward to some nice weather.
