Some of us girls maintain candy jars in our offices and lately they've been getting hit pretty hard by the night-time cleaning crews. I was thinking about getting a hidden camera to bust 'em. Where do you get one? Has anyone had any good experiences using it? Is it even legal?

Spy supply in Plano has all kinds. I don't know the legality tho. The guys at the store might.

check amazon.com.. you want one that starts recording with sound activation. they have little fake cigarette lighters that work great. tons of options.

P-Nut M&M's work best in those jars. Suck all the coating and chocolate off of them, then spit the nuts back in jar for the crew to much on.

They used to make them in ends of books placed on a shelf. A company I used to work for would use these now and then. They couldn't use them in court for any reason, but they can bring the employee in and show them the video. The employees will 99% of the time, pack up their belongings and leave with a company offer to quit, or press the issue and fight the tape. Companies have more money and better lawyers. So most of the time the caught employees will move on. In the case of contract workers, they can be let go on the spot.

It's just ridiculous that I even have to get one. I don't care if they take one or two pieces, but they've been cleaning out the whole jar on all of our desks. Like we wouldn't notice...

we have this bucket thing on the counter full of (good) candy for customers and it would be damn near empty every morning, it was getting a little out of hand. one day the shop was about to be all locked up and i come around the corner and see one of our mechanics just shoving candy into his pockets and then takes another two handfuls and takes off out the back door. he didn't see me, so i went to walgreens bought a bag of candy, put it on his desk with a note that said - it's not that hard to buy your own. he stopped after that.

We have a night watchman at our place that received a week off without pay for cleaning out the fridge. People would bring in food, sodas etc. At night he would just go on a shopping spree.

Nowdays, there are one certain places in our building that you are not on camera.

Cocodrie is right. It may be an employee who is taking it home to their family. Whether it is the cleaning crew or a fellow employee, you are not supposed to provide them and their family with candy.

Good luck. I don't know about the cigarette lighter cams though. I know too many people who are lighter kleptomaniacs.

Take a picture of the same kind of candy in some disgusting situation and tape it up next to the jar.
Kinda like the guys that send a box of donuts to another crew, and a picture of the donuts hanging off thier johnsons on the bottom of the box...under the donuts.

If anything, pass the idea by the boss first.

Replace the candy jar with candied apples, only instead of using apples find some appropriate sized onions, candy them rascalls up, set your vid camera up and prepare to be called in to the AFV show.

Seriously though: I have a client (law firm) that this was happening to, we bought a 8 camera Qsee security system, I came in and set it all up one day, and set it for web based monitoring and that problem got solved!!

i did security in a downtown dallas office building for about a year. there was a rule set up by building management against having your own hidden cameras. not sure why that was. although we did find them very often. security and cleaning crew get to know the building very well and notice new things quick. after all, their job is to spot unusual and new things and report them, clean them or around them, or get rid of them. our job was to report them, then head of security would go with the building manager and have them removed. i'm not sure why. we were just told that it was a homeland security thing.

i never had a problem with it, but here's my suggestion. don't do the obvious. we often found hidden cameras as: new holes in the wall (they most often look like drywall screw holes), new lamps, pictures, toys on the desk, a random cord sticking out from the top of the desk or counter, ceiling tiles that have been moved or don't match, inconveniently or newly located furniture...

or, if you really want them to stop. do something obvious. put up a cam in plain sight. they'll stop everything. just don't put up a fake cam because they're very obvious and people will test them by doing something small here and there and wait for someone to say something.

but first, ask your boss if they know anything about it. some bosses, especially middle management at big companies don't like you putting something out like that because if something goes wrong they get the blame. think, loss-prevention or harassment suits.

then there were the bosses that felt comfortable with us and didn't care if so and so bought the candy. some favored security (like me) and cleaning crew members were told to take candy, snacks, food, drinks for simply doing a good job. one boss would take pockets full of candy at the end of the day and bring them to us. A lawyer (partner) at one firm would tell us to keep it on the down low and tell us to raid the firm's liquor cabinet and fridge for beer during our breaks. i wouldn't take them up on it (unless they physically brought it to us, which they did on special occasions), but others do.

I didn't read through all three pages, so I apologize if someone already posted this. There used to be a "spy shop" in Addison at either Midway an Beltline or Marsh and Beltline. They carried all kinds of stuff like that.

Another option would be to borrow a game camera from someone and set it up at the end of the work day.
