Not to me so long as it's black!

I recently heard of a guy who agreed to buy a boat with a black bottom. And he had seen photos of the boat. When he got there, he said something to the effect of "oh, I didn't know the boat had a black bottom. I'm a flipper and you can't catch flippin' fish out of a boat with a black bottom". I'm figuring the guy found out he couldn't afford the boat and came up with that excuse as cover.

Not that anyone will ever believe that. I prefer the look of a boat with a black bottom, but I don't think it makes one bit of difference to the fish.

I think it can. I would never buy a bright yellow bottomed boat-I've read too many times that the color yellow can elicit a negative response in fish.

I would avoid any loud bright colors. Don't know that it would make a difference but my attitude is, why take an unnessary risk.

Fish love yellows and other bright colored lures, if anything I'd be worried that they were too busy hitting the bottom of my boat and not paying enough attention to my lures.

Fishing in the coosa and black warrior rivers when the waters super clear on bright days I've had the bass swim up under the boat for shade, nothing more annoyin that trying to cast up under the boat where all of the fish went!!

Some people just over-think things. Come on?? Worried about the what color the bottom of the boat is? That is silly. LMAO.. Paint the bottom of it with Spike it or better yet paint a Alabama rig on the bottom of it and drive around in a circle so they think they are schooling, thusly creating a feeding frenzy.. laugh

Would like a school of shad painted on the bottom, kind of like a static Hydrowave. Guys back east used to paint their props chartruse and you could see teeth marks on the prop. That was in the ocean where big toothy critters live. I don't think color of the bottom matters at all

I agree about the black. In clear water, I've had bass swim out from their bushes and sit under the boat. Drop down a tube, and catch 'em.

A bass has a lateral line covered in neuromasts. So the fish knows you are there before you even make a cast. But who hasn't tasted power bait before! They are just curious green critters that like going fast in boats too.

I do not have a dog in this fight, but concider this. This is an open forum that has at times alot of younger less exsperienced (not saying that the OP is) posters looking for what they think is relivant information. Unless they are asking questions about your mother, I think a little patience may be in order. Ive been chaceing those fat girls for the better part of 45 years now and learn somthing every time I go out. So for those of you who have it all figured out kindly exscuse the rest of us who havent.

I think it's a darn good question. I do however think that bottom color dosen't matter. I've caught fish directly below me while in a bright yellow kayak. Noise is the enemy.

Over twenty years ago, I had an "old school" bass angler tell me he always wanted his boat to have a black hull because once a bass is hooked it will head to the most accessible hiding spot. With a black hull the idea to him was the fish would potentially go toward the boat and not wrap up or jump off if it could hide in the dark under the boat.

This may or not be a logical explaination but he believed it helped him land more fish. Who knows; Hydrowaves ~ Black Hull; you got me. If it makes you more confident; make mine black!!! hmmm

I hadn't really thought about it. But it was an interesting question, that I for one was glad that someone asked.

We are always asking about lure colors, worm colors, why not boat colors.

I'm not sure was just told this a long time ago.
Maybe someone in the business can verify:

I was told that when the manufacturer is putting on the clear coat with white bottom boats they can see where they are at and apply it evenly across the bottom. But with Dark colored boats they have a hard time telling exactly where they are at with the sprayer and put on additional coats to make sure it is covered completely. This would make the black/dark colored boats a little thicker and maybe more scratch resistant. Of course if you do get a scratch it will show more so maybe that is a wash.. LOL

This is actually a great question. In other forms of fishing such as Salmon fishing much thought is givin to the boat color or more importantly electronic footprint. However with my Bass boat I have always considered its purpose as a barrier more important than an attractor. When an aggressive bass thinks it has pinned a bait to a barrier it often takes advantage of its position and stikes.

I don't have any research to prove one way or the other. I've fished out of a myriad of colored hulls. My present hull is basically silver flake. I didn't get em yesterday but I did the last time I was out. A friend told me he didn't like his new boat partly because of the black hull. He said it showed every chip from the road.

Black has always been a hard color to keep clean. That hasn't changed just because they put it on a boat hull.

To each his own. I don't like boats with a lot of metal flake in the finish as they are much more expensive and difficult to repair.White is the easiest to keep looking good and black does show scratches more than white, period!

I have often wondered about this, too. The fish can`t see all that far in the north Texas lakes that I fish because they are mostly muddy or stained. Although, Fork can get fairly clear in the winter when I like to throw a spoon. So, last summer I went to Lake Murray in Oklahoma to see for myself what the fish see when they look up. Murray is a pretty clear lake, so I went down by the dam in 100` of water and swam under my boat with snorkel gear on. I swam between 10-15` below my boat and my white hull was now black with the sun being high in the sky.
I like the look of a black hull better, but I don`t think the fish really care.

I guess it depends on whether or not you see your boat as a tool or a pretty thing to stare at. If you like keeping her pretty, maybe white is the best option, since the scratches won't show.

The fishing studies I have read about says the fish don't seem to care so much about the color of the hull but if they find out you have bright red carpet they haul arse in the opposite direction for some reason.

Someday, your are going to sell that tool and it might be harder to sell if oxidation has eaten into that pretty clear coat over your high dollar metal flake finish.White can be buffed out and made to look like new much easier than any other color.Just my opinion.

Some Saltwater charters have the bottom hull painted w/ sillouettes of Schools of Tuna, Mackeral,Ballyhoo, etc.. I wonder what effect it would have.. Could get a Shad, or Bream school painted on a Bass Rig...HMMMM.....

Lots of replies to a simple question. I never asked about what fish will do but there was a lot of interesting points made. I'm going to restore my 86 Skeeter SF175 which is silver flake top and bottom. Going white this time but what to know pros and cons to the color of the bottom.

Lite blue like the sky or black I have seen bass swim under the boat for shade no foolin', I think bright colors can spook fish when in doubt go stealth.
