bought a 2011 ext cab 5.3 v8. Truck will only get 16.9 mph on the open road. Is this the normal milage for this truck? Could or should it get better?

That is terrible in my opinion. My diesel will avg 21-22. I had a new Ram 1500 rental a couple of weeks back. It got 22 from Weatherford to Lufkin.

the hemi's have a cyl shutdown (on most of em, think its an option)that is like the old cadillac 4-6-8 engines. know a couple of folks here that are gettin over 20 avg hiway and about 15 or so city, not bad for a pickup.

That's right on. Empty on my '12 4x4 Hemi getting 18-19mpg on the hwy. Got 32 gallon tank so it goes always. Not as good as a diesel towing but I'll take it.

bought a 2011 ext cab 5.3 v8. Truck will only get 16.9 mph on the open road. Is this the normal milage for this truck? Could or should it get better? People that tell you their half-ton pickups are getting 20mpg+ are bad at math or drive 50mph. That's about right. My Ford 5.4l gets about 14 in the city and 16-17 on the highway. Maybe a little better with a tailwind and cruise control.

Leaving from the B/CS area if I head north or south I can get 18.5-21 in my 11 F250, but if I head East or West i'm going to get 16.8-17.9. Alot to do with headwinds and the terrain. Hills will kill gas mileage. I fully believe the new v8 1/2 tons should average above 19 (except toyota)

Is it a 4 wheel drive? If it is that is about right for average all around driving.

According to the computer calculation on my 2011 F150, 5.0 L, I am getting between 16.5 and 17.1 average with City Driving. 13,000 miles on it. The best computer generated calc was 21.7 on a long distance highway trip. I'm happy with the mileage, but I beyond pizzed at the gas prices and of course the current sorry administration in DC.
I think your 2011 Silverado at 16 and 17 city is about right for a pickup.

All the commercials I see that advertise 20-22mpg in a truck are for the 3.x liter V6 engine I believe that a diesel can get 20+, but only under perfect conditions is a V8 gas going to touch that.

Know a few people that i sold ecoboost to and they could touch 23 if they kept it at 65. We all know mpg is based on conditions, but driven correctly the modern trucks can get it (4x2, not 4x4)

Being that yours is a 2011, it's not a fair comparison. But I've got a 2004 Crew Cab 1500 with the 5.3L V8, and mine is 2WD. City driving - 15-16 mpg, Highway driving @ 75mph - 17 mpg, Highway driving at 65 mph - 18 mpg.
I have the 4-speed auto with the 3.73 gears, which means it'll get up and go quick and I can pull pretty well. But I think my gas mileage figures are pretty average for a Silverado. Subtract 1 mpg for 4WD, and add 1-2 mpg on highway driving for the 6-speed auto.
Yours has AFM, which means it should do a little better if you do what you can to keep it in 4-cylinder mode.
I drove from Royse City to Midlothian a year ago at the end of the early Feb ice storm in my truck and went 25-30 mph the whole way and barely hit the brakes at all and actually got 23 mpg. Lost the back end a couple times, but it was a trip I had to make and I didn't want to take my wife's almost brand new Honda CR-V. But the 2WD pickup isn't a wise choice in those conditions.

the 2007 with the 4.8 small v8 got 20 mpg avg city/hwy. Traveling the same road with the new truck. it will not do it chevy dealer says it is not fully broke in yet. it is not 4wd. sheet on the window states 15 city 23 hwy. how do u make it stay in 4cyl. The only time it shifts to 4cyl is when i am traveling down hill with the wind at my back.

My flippin' car gets about 15.5 in town from a 4.4L V8. With the way the VVT is set up, it starts to get good mileage at about 45 mph, but it's hard to go more than a couple of minutes without coming up on a red light, and then it has to get the heavy thing back up to speed again. On the highway, it'll get 28 to 30. The Deville gets about 14.5 to 15 in town.
My last Ford pickup ('97 Extended Cab 4x4 Lariat with 4.6L) got about 14 in town, 16 or 17 on the highway.

Hey Bill come take ride and I'll show you 18 mpg. Now you can cut that almost in half when I pull a boat. I know for a fact the EcoBoost gets 20+. My truck has a 6 speed auto 3:55 gears, cylinder deactivation, and is 4x4. Perfect conditions or not the Ford EcoBoost gets the best. Then the Hemi. Then the 5.3 GM trucks. But if you think a new factory stock Diesel is going to get much better in a 2500 or up 4x4 I don't think so. Diesels are getting choked out by emissions and fuel prices. The taxes and cost to operate them is getting harder to justify. Wish I had one for every time I towed.

I already said that. But a full-size pickup with a V8, 4x4, on the interstate is not going to get 20 unless you are on cruise control at 60 with a stiff tailwind, and never have to pass anyone or touch your brakes. And even that is pushing it.

That is about what I get on the same truck. It sits in the shop hooked to my boat and I drive a Hyundai for running around. It gets 35mpg. The truck is a '03 with less than 50k miles.

I run 70mph and the tac is sitting at 1.5. the old truck run 1.75 at 70 on the open road and got a lot better milage 20 mph. hind sight should have kept it and run it till the wheels fell off. we took a trip to Del Rio and on that long haul it almost got 22 it was 21.7 the old truck that is.
