Well I bought a new Gmc sierra z71 crew cab about 6 months ago. All was good up until about a month ago, I started noticing a light little tick at idle in the mornings and after driving a ways , letting it sit and then starting it back up.
The noise has gradually got worse. The first trip to the dealer they said oh that's normal, second trip" oh that's carbon build up on the pistons". Now this 3rd time around they said "You have AFM system Failure" . Now they say they gotta tear down the engine, install new lifters, solenoids and It may need a new Afm control module.
Leave it up to GM to ruin a great engine with some Crappy Active fuel management junk that only improves fuel economy by about 1 mpg. By the way my truck only has 12k miles on it and The dealership has done all the maintenance on it.I'm very dissapointed In My new sierra!!

The cab noise is crazy. It's like riding in my old jeep. I would not have bought the darn thing had it not been thousands cheaper than the Ford or Toyota, and it gets better gas mileage than the others as well.

my afm 5.3 in my 2007 z71 burnt more oil than i could keep track of. running synthetic and i was still adding a few quarts inbetween oil changes. then the engine started to fail and at 103k (warranty was up at 100k) i limped it on to a ford lot, traded it in and bought a new ford.

Yep I have 2010 Chevy crew that has a lot of cab and road noise. Buddy has a 2011 same truck, same Goodyear 20`s and his is much, much quieter. Whats different.

This makes no sense unless GM extends the warranty.

Sorry to hear, I will spare you the Ford/Chevy jokes. It happens to all of them. This is one of my own reasons for going with the 5.0 in my 2011 Ford, I was leery of the new EcoBoost system. Maybe not justified, but I stayed away from it anyway. To make you feel good, I can tell you I just had the turn signal windshield washer switch arm replaced on my 9 month old new Ford. AND, we just had all of the camshaft phasers changed out on our 2007 Lincoln MKX with 37,000 miles.

Yeah, I'm as much of a Chevy guy as anyone, but the 2007 and newer Chevrolets all seem pretty bad. I've got a buddy up here at work who bought one and had an oil consumption problem (1 quart of oil consumed roughly every 1000 miles), and the Chevy dealer had him go through test after test after test and finally they agreed that it had a problem, but Chevy was unable to fix it and they were unwilling to give him a new engine. So instead of trying to fight Chevy, he just sold it to some guy without telling him about the oil problem and bought an old Toyota Eclipse that he paid $2500 for (less than 4 truck payments) and has been driving it ever since with 0 problems.

It's easy for me to criticize him for selling it without telling the guy about the oil problem, but he was insanely frustrated with the local dealer and tired of making huge payments on a truck that wouldn't even work right and the dealer wouldn't fix.

I'm sorry to hear you are having difficulties with your truck.

Then on the other hand you bought a truck from the federal government made by the unions. You should have known better.

Yep my family owned a chevy dealership from 86-02 and my first truck i purchased myself in 05 was an f150. I firmly believe ford makes a better gas engine for a truck. Now if your wanting a pretty vehicle that isn't going to pull much and have to work. Then chevy/gmc all the way. Great looking trucks thumb but personally i will not own another chevrolet gas motor

I had a ford and the transmission locked up after 6 months. Had it towed to the dealership where they said nothing was wrong, picked it up and drove it out of the parking lot, and it locked up in the middle of the highway......got the same ole song and dance again from the dealership. Only this time I insisted they keep it and drive it until it happened again, and it did with the Service Manager driving. I fought with that carppy compnay to fixe it EVENTHOUGH IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY!! They finally fixed it, I sold it and will never drive ford again. See how this works......we can go back and forth about car manufactures all day, and yes Toyota, Honda, Nissan, VW, BMW, Mercedes all have problems too. I LOVE MY CHEVY!!

You are right, they all have problems. The determining factor for me is, when in doubt, go with the companies that did not take federal bailout money that they never intended to payback. It kind of thins the herd and makes for an easier choice.

I always liked Fords better, but the Chevys do look good. I think if I were buying one right now though, i'd get an EcoBoost 4x4 Platinum edition.

I know goats are hard to swallow for some. But they have come a long way fellers. I've had an 01, 04, now this '12. They keep improving. I love the Ford for many reasons but this just caught my eye. The truck doesn't even look 4x4 is my only gripe. Drives as good or better than a Ford 150 has balls to the walls power and even has a heated steering wheel. Now how many of you Ford and Chevy guys have that? I hear birds chirping! They all make good ones and they all make bad ones. Just get one that you like and the world will keep turning even if you arnt in the cool crowd.
