My friends are spontaneous to say the least. I was asked to go to the boat show Friday afternoon with a friend of mine, he said he just wanted to walk around and drink a few beers and look at boats. I got tied up with work and had to cancel on him.

To give a history on my Bud, he has never owned a Bass boat in his life much less own a good rod and reel combo.

To my surprise he called today to tell me he is the proud owner of a Ranger bass boat.

I said your kidding. What size is it I asked? I don't have a clue he said, they tried to sell me a big motor, but I just got the 250 instead.

What about electronics and trolling motor I asked? They said they were the best, he said, a 10 inch screen and a 8 inch screen that can downs an I think. Trolling motor is supposed to be the best.





What else did you get on it? Some kind of shallow anchoring system, there are 2 of them on the back of the boat. I said those are called Power Poles. He said that that sounded familiar.

What brand motor did you get? I got a Mercury. 4 stroke or 2 stroke? 4stroke..

He said I really wanted you to go and show me what to get. I said you did pretty good without me.

Can't wait to take it out and show him how to use it.

At least he got the best! Will last a lifetime if taken care of.

Yea he has done well in life. He was a single dad most of his adult life and has a grown son. I think him and his son wants to try this Bass fishing addiction for awhile. He probably don't have Ken A money but he is doing ok.

No he has no idea whats in store there. I think I can help him out with his choices in that department.

Nothing wrong with that. Good friend to have. At least he is humble enought to realize he doesn't know it all and wants you to help.

Did the salesman tell him how much it was going to cost?

He didn't give that much. I'll post some pics in 2 to 3 weeks when he gets it in. I think it's some kind of silver/black combo.

Did he have a tradein? I've been quoted by several dealers in the low 60's on the same boat.

They were 60k plus easy. Heck triton and skeeter were at that price and that's the "boat show" price haha.

Just depends on what he got on the boat and how much time he negotiated on the deal.

My fishing partner purcahsed a new Ranger Z-520 a few years ago from Fun N Sun, He had Ranger do some modifications to like the rod lockers when it was being built. He decked it out and I am sure it was pushing mid 60's in price and I am sure he negotiated.

Since this is his first bass boat, it is your responsibility as a friend to go with him every trip until he proves himself behind the wheel!

He went to a boat show loooked around and probably made his informed decision. Trusted in a boat salesman in arguably the best boat manufacturer on the market. And pulled the trigger to put himself and his son on the water together.

it is all relative, buying a bass boat like that is similar to many on here at Bass Pro making impulse buy on a new gun or high end rod. it is fun to splurge now and then within your limits.

Would have been an interesting conversatin with the salesmen.

I don't fish, but would like to get into bass fishing with my son. This boat looks interesting, what are those pole things in the back for? Looks like it has 2 TV's on it, that is good. Do I have a choice between Dish and Direct TV?

Just kidding on this, but I bet the salesman had a party that night. I am sure your friend did a bit more than just walk into the boat show and walk out with a 60K Ranger. Hopefully he has an idea what he is getting himself into.

I did basically the same thing 8 years ago. Decided 1 day to take up bass fishing, went to a dealer walked in and told salesman I wanted to buy bass boat. I told salesman I had never been is bass boat, he thought I was kidding him. Bought a Triton that day with the understanding the salesman would show me how to load and unload boat and how to drive it.

Best toy I have ever bought toatlly hooked on bass fishing. Since the triton have upgraded size wise to skeeter 250 then ranger 522 and now on my second ranger 522.

A friend of mine did this a few years ago with a MasterCraft wakeboard boat. Except he really bought it. He had been at a strip club in Dallas drinking, and went to the boat show because the dancers didn't believe him that he would buy one (I know, he is easily influenced by nekkid women), bought a boat that ended up costing him around $80k, then went and had about $10k of stereo equipment installed on it. You know what they say about a fool and his money.....
