Anybody have any recommendations on a good electric knife for bigger fish like 20 and 30 pounders? I've burned up 3 in the pass two months and need a good one.

On the larger redfish, I use a manual filet knife as I cut down the top of the back first. Redfish scales are killer after they grow to 24-25 inches long. After slipping my knife between the scales and the back's ridge to make a shallow cut, then I can use an electric knife if i want. But I've gotten so used to using a non-electric on larger fish, I can actually do a better and faster job without an electric knife. Don't waste your money on electric knives for large fish. I havent seen one yet that's worth a darn.

Amen to that. Thought I would invest in a new electric knife this past summer just before my offshore snapper trip with a buddy. Well, we ended up with 5 limits of snapper (10 fish) all between 16-20 lbs each, 2 barracuda (one pushed 35 lbs) and 2 nice mahi mahi. I whipped out my new Mister Twister saltwater electric fillet and went at it. It worked great for about 1 1/2 - 2 snappers, then it was like trying to cut leather with a butter knife, lol. We fought thru it with a mix of that knife and a 2 regular fillet knifes but even those were kind of small for these fish. So, upon arriving home, I went online and ordered myself a really nice Dexter fillet knife, larger vrariety. I can't remember the number off the top of my head but it has a longer, sturdier blade than a normal 6" fillet knife. I tried it out on some other fish and it sliced thru them great. Think I'll reserve the electric knifes for freshwater fish like sand bass, crappie and catfish under 6 lbs.

Very good article here regarding the use of a blade opposed to a electric. thumb
