The Texas Striper Association is pleased to announce the first tournament of the year at Canyon Lake, February 25th, 2012. The tournament will be hosted out of Turkey Cove Lodge. Registration will begin at 5:30am and the Captains meeting will commence at 6am. All boats must be present for inspection at that time. There is a boat ramp at Turkey Cove Lodge provided the water levels remain the same. Weigh-in will be at 3pm at Turkey Cove Lodge. Please see the registration form and membership form for rules and regulations.

Lodging will be provided by Turkey Cove Lodge 830-899-2744 and Holiday Lodge 830-964-4617. Please note boat parking at each of these lodges is limited, unfortuately. Each lodge can accomodate 5-7 boats. They are just a few miles apart but do put you relatively close to the lake.

Excellent choice. The ramp would be County Ramp #2, my favorite. It's been closed for months, but I guess the recent precip has put us just over (899 ft.) the 898 ft. the ramp needs. It's a nice, wide 2 lane ramp, with a floating dock and huge lot. I'll be up there in a few days, and will verify for fact certain that the ramp is operative.

I've frequently observed that guests of the lodge frequently leave their rigs on that lot overnight, so as to be all hooked up and ready to hit the water come first light. I think many of them assume that the lot is part of the lodge property. It's very safe, being several miles from the main road, and illuminated. I think you could probably keep an eye on your rig from one of the upper "lakeside view" rooms. Not certain that, strictly speaking, overnight parking is allowed, but they're pretty laid back about this sort of thing.

I somehow have a hard time visualizing Holiday Lodge accommodating 7 or 8 boats, much less hooked-up rigs. The ramp it sits above is a late-night "hangout" and unsafe for overnight parking.

I've not noticed any RV sites on the south side of the lake. There are several such places not far off, though, where FM 306 crosses the Guad. One of them is Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park. I've driven through there and, despite the corny name, it's quite decent.

Thanks for the insight Duff. My partner just got off the phone with the flks at Turkey Cove and we will be staying there this weekend and Tournament week. Looking forward to fishing the lake.

Holiday does have the capability for 5-7 boats. Met the owner a couple of weeks ago and he was very accomodating.

Unfortunately, Canyon Lake just did not have a more adequate place for lodging or ramps. Only motels available woud have been back in New Braunfels. Teams are going to have to work together and be efficient with the boat parking.........

You will want to be careful on that road to the lodge, particularly at night, because there are a lot of half-tame deer milling around there, and they will step right in front of you.

I may have to sacrifice some of the compartments of the boat so that I have room for some of this stuff!!

We are going to be camping. Robert is Driving his RV down. This weekend we are going to be staying at Potters Creek but going to check out another RV place about a 3 miles from the lodge.

Duff, you are right!! Deer everywhere on that road....Everyone needs to be careful. On a side note, this lake is not that big so getting to the Meeting site wont be that rough.

Lots of deer. The lake is only 8300 surface acres. Duff how far up the river can a person go right now.

That river is full of trees everywhere....... Good luck with that!!

Well, before the recent rainfall, I went up as far as the Rebecca Creek Ramp, where I was going through 4 ft. water and the Lowrance chart showed the channel running over what's now dry land. Found lots of bait around Demijohn bend, but no stripers. There are some monster stumps from the mouth of the river on up, and until you learn the channel, I wouldn't try going any faster than 4 mph or so. Your GPS chart will give you a general idea of where the channel lies, but you can't rely on it. Lots of props have been chewed up within sight of Cranes Mill Park, and it gets worse on up. The stretch of shallow water going into Cordoba Bend is particularly hazardous.

I spent a lot of years fishing the river for crappie and white bass. Really an interesting place. I even remember the crappie house that was at Cranes Mill when I was kid. The little dock I fished at Cranes Mill in high school is still there but it is on the ground now. Seeing it few weeks ago brough back many childhood memories. Its been over 20 years since I have been there.......

You've certainly got seniority on me. It was the big "Dock Closed" sign on the land side that threw me off about that ramp.

Anyone interested in a good paper map, I have two, the AID and the fairly new Fishing Hotspots maps. The latter is far and away superior as to the lake itself. Last time I checked, Academy didn't carry it. Got mine at BassPro or Cabela's. The AID map has better coverage of the secondary roads in the area.

As for RV hookups, I suspect the Bunk Haus in Hancock might be the rock-bottom low. I spoke with the lady that runs the place a while back, and she told me trailer parking wouldn't be a problem. It's several miles closer to the Lodge than Potters Creek.

I seemed to remember seeing an RV facility of some sort right below the dam, and taking a look on Google Earth, sure enough, there's a Guadalupe Best RV Park right off the road that runs along the dam. Not sure they have a website. I read that they specialize in "alcohol free gatherings," which sounds a little ominous.

More helpful tips:

There is constuction on 306 on the North side of the lake.

Watch you speed. Bulverde is a big speed trap. Lots of police in the area and the speed limits change.

Local favorite's:
Sweeties donuts in Satler is a great donut / kolachie shop and open at 6:00. Granny D's on 306, Ninfa's tacos, Buddy gas station (306) has good sandwiches and boat oil, Jay & Diana's Horseshoe Grill has great burgers, there is a Super S in Satler.

Other events:
The GRTU Trout Fest is the 24th - 26th at Rio Raft on River Rd.
This is free, if anyone is bringing the family/kids, they have all kinds of kid things like the climbing wall and such.

There is the WORD Kid Fish happening on Sunday the 26th. Also free.

Canyon can be a mean lake in the wind, be careful.
With the water down a bit there are submerged trees in the channel up river past the Cranes Mill fishing pier.

Very hard to find/catch any Shad.

Fished Sat and Sunday. The turkey Cove ramp is good. Fishing was slow caught a few. Robert caught a 50+lb Flathead and Mike caught a 18 lb blue. Water temps in the mid 50's and super clear. Especially by the dam.

Caleveras and Bruanig may not be the closest but dang sure the easiest and almost a sure thing. On Buchanan my normal places to get them are hard to get to. Inks at night by the bridge is pretty easy but can sometimes skunk you.

Or you could use something like this, then you dont have to get up early or stay up late, and jack with cleaning filters, changing water, charging batteries for the shad tank, etc,etc,etc

From what Holzer was telling me catching shad still didn't cut into your curl time. Matter fact he said the more you excercised the more of an expert you became on the art of catching shad.

Alan you mentioned Rule changes? What are they for this year. I read the rules and I couldn't see any differences.

Brandon - I summarized the rule changes on the home page, 3rd paragraph. The main change was to the big fish pot. This year there will be two pots, a tournament pot and a season pot. All monies for each tournament will be paid out at each tournament, previously half went to season pot. As for the season pot you can join at anytime but only fish caught after joining will count towards the pot. The season big pot is a one time fee.

We also added a rule that if a person is going to protest or accuse someone of cheating they need to put up a 200.00 deposit and if the accusation is unfounded the 200.00 will be forfeited. To accuse someone of cheating is a pretty serious charge and can cause damage to their reputation.

All tournament registrations will be at 5:30am followed by Captains Meeting at 6:00am.

Hopefully we clearly defined tie breakers.
