Been out 3 times this week with no problems, then this occured. The only thing I did was put fuel in boat.
start: no problem
Idle: no problem
Take off: 600 to 3000rpm good
Took approx 200-300 feet going from 3000 to 4000 rpm to finally get nose down to get on plane. Once on plane no problem. Seems like no low end torque

Thanks

Bad gas, or may be a fuel gasket that has ruptured, mine did the same thing last year and the rubber gasket had ruptured not giving it enough gas to get out of the hole.....

I am by no means a mechanic but may help

what kind of motor? Kind of sounds like a mercury Pro xs with a bad coil

Probably just a fuel line problem. Change it out. Buy a good one, not a Wal Mart issue. Be sure to change any fuel filters and water seperator that it may have.
This is another thing that would happen to my old Even. motor. Everytime I had it fogged and serviced it would not get up on plane for at least one tank of fuel. It did it twice. I never had it fogged again. When I traded it in they serviced it and the new buyer brought it back because it wouldn't get up and go.

I would have put money on it that it was a pro XS. Been there done that twice. What year is your motor? Is it an 08/09 by chance?

It was nice to hear fuel line, filter etc. Powerhead makes my wallet hurt, hopefully if it is the warrenty will cover it.

Don't let all that powerhead junk scare you. Start simple. The cable and the fuel delivery are both likely causes. You said it happened immediately after you filled er up. That alone should be your area of focus. Think outside the box also. Is it a prop issue? Has your jackplate dropped? Good luck and lemme know what you find.

You have a bad coil more than likely. I have an 08 250 pro xs and I went through 4 of them before merc would put 6 new ones in it. It's irritating but they will warranty them. They told me there is a service bulletin to replace all 6 on my year model.

Yes, filled up a couple days before, I have a Hydrolic Jack plate and I made sure both trim and plate were down. I will start simple as you stated and if all else fails by the end of the week will take it in. If it's anything more serious I suspect the warrenty will cover it.

Thanks

I bet you can pull your spark plugs and one is fouled and that is your blown coil. I just got mine out of the shop for the same thing last week.

No problem. It just sucks having to go with out a boat for 2 weeks to get them replaced when its a 30 min. job to replace all six. Waiting for merc to send them and the dealer to put you in line is what takes so long. You can find them on the net for bout 130.00 avg.

When a coil drops it will run a little rough at idle and low rpms. I also had a spark plug tip fall off one time. No engine damage.

I had a bad plug wire do this last year. 250 ProXS. Changed all 6 wires and plugs. Warranty.

I thought for sure it was a coil too.

Good Luck.

Oh this is too familiar...08 ProXs 225. I had blown power head for same issues. They tried to put a crate motor on it it wouldn't work. Had coils and ECM problem as well. They wound up putting a new complete power head dressed out on mine this past July. 4 or 5 months of Mercury and dealership going round and round but they finally made it right. Hope yours is a simple issue but I wouldn't count on it.

This could be related to a problem with the electrical system, fuel delivery system or an operational problem. Way too broad to diagnose on an online forum. Take it to a certified mechanic and let them diagnose it. If you don't do the correct diagnostic steps, you're just going to be throwing parts at the problem and likely wasting your time.

My motor did the same thing a while back and wound up being a seal leaking. I thnk the shop fixed it for around $150.

Thanks

Don't let them jerk you around. Make sure you find out if "all" the coils fall under the Merc SB.

Could be may different things as everyone has mentioned, but I just got my 08 250 proXS out of shop....same symptoms..ended up being one failel coil and another failing intermintently. Mercury replaced all six under warranty along with all of the spark plugs. Like everyone has said, it is a known problem with 08/09 Mercury Pro XS and they will make good on it if its still under warranty. Push to have all of the coils replaced if it does end up being a coil issue! Good Luck

Didn't read through everything so sorry if this is a repeat. Might be as simple as a loose plug wire. Happened to me once right after I got her out after a shop visit. Sure enough one of the wires was loose. Mercs don't ride well on 5 cylinders.

You know it chance. Bet a cold beer its a coil prob. Wish I had all the time back with my boat that it has spent in the shop since I've owned it. If this is the first time this has happened to it since you owned it square you are one of the lucky ones. But man when that xs is running right it sure is hard to beat

I have the same motor and had the same issues. It was in the shop and fixed three times. Finally a Mercury rep from the factory was visiting the dealer. They spent four hours trying to make the boat run right on the water. Finally they replaced the entire top end and the complete computer. Sorry I don't know the technical term but it sounds like the exact same thing. My motor had about 60 hours on it when this occurred. Good Luck! Sorry if this has been stated I didn’t read the entire post.

Yes I'm thinking ECM like my major problem. That little jewel is $10k. So don't like replacing them. They will try everything before they go that route. If they do it's cheaper and easier for Mercury to send a new dressed power head.

Dropped it off this morning, spoke to the mechanic and explained what's occuring, first thing out of his mouth was coil. He said if that's it, Merc says replace all six. Will know for sure later.

Thanks for all the info, what a knowledge base on TFF, now can anybody tell me how to catch fish smile

That's good square! They need to. There is a bad prob. With them. Glad it worked out for you. Nobody took my beer bet so I guess i'll have to buy my own. I been fighting coils since about 3 months after I bought my boat. Good luck buddy!
