I'm gonna try some 'ol school doughballin'. I'm not too particular on what kind of fish I catch so lets hear your best recipes (if they're not a secret).

I just made up some last night with Smucker's Strawberry Syrup, some light molasses and bleached flour.

I've used the old Wheaties and Big Red and believe it or not that stuff does still work.

I prefer 40% bran, big red with a little vanilla.
Haven't seen the 40% bran in a while but its what my dad taught me on and we always did great with it no matter what water.

40% Bran,, what was that Bubba? Cereal, Animal Feed, what? Most of the Feed bran I've come across is flake, and is more sponge-like than it is a binder or breaker. Kinda like Alfalfa after it goes through a blender.

2lb bread crumb to 1 can creamed corn. As far as the bran it was Kellogs cereal. The carp and cats in the park loved that stuff.

Jello dough

2 Cups of water boiling with 1/2 a big package of Strawberry Jello and 1/4 cup of sweetener* disolved into it.

2 Cups of Corn Masa (not Corn Meal)
1 Cup of Flour

Mix the water with the dry ingediants.

Let it cool and then need. If it is cracking add water, if it is sticky add more Masa. When fishing take some masa in case it gets sticky.

I also sometimes add (depending on my mood) vanilla, red pepper, habanero powder, or anise.

*Sweetener - Anything to make it sweet. I am also a beer brewer so I use priming sugar (since I have it on hand). Corn Syrup or table sugar would be fine.

I used to use on a treble hook, but was converted to safe carping and now use a button on a hair.

no problem Don, if made right it will stay on a single hook with no issues.

My bait will not work on a single hook well. It Needs the button.
It can be firmed up with more flour.

That's some good stuff, staying on a single hook.

I don't plan to fish the dough at distance, I'll likely just use a light cast or an underhand pitch.

I do have the fox paste "thingies" to keep it on if I want to put it out there a mile.

If you really don't mind getting stinky hands and want a multi species bait. Add a little bit of catfish dough bait in the mix, shad or liver worked great.

Yep, sounds like a plan. I don't remember when the shad start running in the creeks? Do you?

I'll just have to throw a net every now and then.

Still love the bread and cottonseed. Wet 6 slices of bread and mix in the meal until firm enough to cast. Always works great.

ARe there different kinds of cottonseed meal or is it all the same? I'll give that one a go for sure. I hear the cotton seed meal is good for cats and buffalo.

Cottonseed Meal can be found in a Finer Grind. Not all the feed stores have it, so you may need to ask around a bit for it.

I prefer the finer grind. It can end up being a binder, but I've dealt with some coarse grind CSM that was almost a breaker.

Shad were running in the lake I fished yesterday. We could smell 'em and the slicks were moving due to predators hammering them. Caught 8 carp and broke my PB. If I only had a scale. I know it was a very high 20, maybe thirty. It was almost twice the length and girth of my 15 lb.'er.

Don, If you want some good dough bait recipes, check the Dough Bait section/thread on the CAG forum. I have a hefty list, and there are a bunch of other options.
