A good friend of mine who retired recently used to tell us that Buddy Holly's parents and his were great friends. They used to get together for weekends at his place in Kermit, Texas. Said he always had to share his bed with Buddy's brother.
They were headed from Clear Lake, IA to Moorhead, MN.
If you ever get a chance to see a concert called Winter Dance Party do it. My wife and I saw it in Dallas two years ago. They recreate the show that Holly, Valens and the Big Bopper did back in '59, singing the sons in the same order they were done then, The guy who sings Buddy Holly looks just like him, sounds like him. He even had an exact replica guitar made and has steel wound strings like Holly used. He is a stickler for detail and wants every note to sound just like it did then.
Great show. J.P. Richardon, Jr. does the few songs his dad (The Big Bopper) did.
They were leaving one concert and heading towards another. If I remember right it was a coin toss that determined who got on that plane.
" In 1958, Buddy Holly arranged Waylon Jennings' first recording session, of "Jolie Blon" and "When Sin Stops (Love Begins)". Holly hired Jennings to play bass. Jennings unintentionally missed flying with Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens on the flight which they died. Before takeoff, Holly, in jest, told Jennings "I hope your ol' bus freezes up", to which Jennings, also in jest, responded with "I hope your ol' plane crashes". These words would haunt Jennings his entire life."

Waylon gave up his seat on the plane to Holly, who was ill, and didn't want to ride in the unheated bus. Tommy Allsup lost the coin toss to Valens. Back in the late 70's or early 80's Allsup had a club in Ft Worth called Tommy's Head's Up Saloon.
