First of all, I HATE Shaving. Now from my jawline up I shave by pulling the razor down. Below my jawline I pull the razor up. If I try to go down with the razor on my neck then I will end up with a ton of small whiteheads/pimples.

I shave in the shower. Eyes closed, face to the water.

I pull against the grain which means ever which way.
Use Gillette Good News with the med strip,basting brush for a shaving brush, enamel camp cup for a shaving cup, and used soap slivers for shaving soap.
I fill the cup with hot water and set in the basin full of hot water. After my shower I get to shave with hot water and a soft beard. Don't laugh. It's been working like that for the last 40 years.

I only shave the neck, and I go down. Easier that way. Never have problems with razor burn

I use a Gillette Fusion and their shaving cream

Same, first down, then up paying close attention to the burns and stache.

I like to use a light coating of wd-40 and a handheld butane torch. done in a flash.

And I thouhgt a belt sander with 40 grit was fast.

Soak a wash rag in hot-hot water then cover your face and neck with it. Resoak/heat the rag several times and hold it on your face and neck. It'll condition your skin and soften the hairs.

Make certain that you don't use a dull razor.

Don't buy gimmicks. You don't need half a dozen blades. One good sharp one will do.

Shave slow. Going too fast and/or shaving on a dry spot will cause problems.

Put a clean bowl in the sink and fill it with fresh hot water as needed. There's germs and microbes in that there sink.

They make some antibump creams and whatnot that they keep with the shaving stuff at Walmart and other stores.

Only shave the neck...shave upwards

With a new double edged old time razor I shave from top to bottom for the first week or two. From then on till the razor blade needs changing I shave from bottom up because it just shaves closer that way with a dull razor.

grew a beard because i hated the daily upkeep of shaving. but when i did i was so lazy that i did it dry. worked against the grain and never left stubble or red marks.

watch out. shaving against the grain will give you ingrown hairs

I agree with this. My dad was an old time barber and he always warned me that shaving up your neck could (and I repeat could, because I know alot on here do it the other way) cause bad ingrown hairs. My dad has seen many people that had to go get them removed and you wouldn't believe how deep they can grow...

Slowly and in a lot of different directions until the face/neck is smooth. I'm pretty fortunate in that I don't razor burn much at all. I've used Gillette Mach 3 since I was 18 (same handle, too).

Try using some of your wife's hair conditioner. The beard will be extremely soft and sooooo easy to shave, no matter what blade you use. Learned from one of my ancient uncles who only used a light coating of baby oil on his beard. Even when he was over 75 yr old his skin looked young.
