I have a 2.5 acre pond on the ranch and need to put some structure in it. I got plenty of bricks and cinder blocks for weight. I have tried Mesquite trees in the past but they rot to fast, and there are no cedars on the ranch.

Any ideas?

Well I was going to say find you some cedar that has been grubbed...cut them off about 3' above ground level and sink the roots plus that 3' sticking up.

Got some friends down the road a piece that have cedars, guess I'll have to hit them up..

Use the biggest sweetgums you can put. They las years draw bait faster. Just dont sink any with the balls on them. Which most juvi trees wont have. I am sure you have sweetgums. The blue gill love em and will stack all in em. I have a family pond in bama and dropped some sweetgums in even just cut a few and let em lay off the edge of the bank and the fish are all in em.

^^^ +1

We start all our crappie piles in April with at least one sweetgum. For bulk we put in willows. The willows seem to degrade so we add more throughout the summer. Sweetgums are the viaga of brushpiles. When we go back each spring to start brushing again, the sweetgums still are standing up and give us a reference to start dumping.

Find a factory that is willing to get rid of a few broken pallets. Stack them up and tie them 2-4 feet high and use your bricks to weigh them down. Simple, cheap and fun.

I know its a photo of a photo but you will get the idea. The rootball/roots normally sit pretty good on the bottom and the rest stays standing up better than just tree limbs. I have cut some a lot bigger than this but this is a quick pic I had of a couple before I sunk them in some lakes I was managing at the time...

DO NOT put old cars, anything else metal and pallets in your pond. The metal objects will cut your line and the pallets, while they make good structure, are hades to work a worm or jig through without hanging up. Cedar, Sweet gum and Bois D Arc make the best piles.

Not to mention the potential chemical risks to the water.
