I'm looking at a boat out of state that I'm considering purchasing. The boat has a title, but the motor does not. The state they live in does not require a title on outboards. Have any of you ever bought a boat out of state that didn't have the same title requirements that we have here in Texas. If so, how big of a pain in the rear is it?

Thanks in advance

The one i just bought was out of oklahoma, to register the trailer u must take it and have a state inspection sticker put on it, then u must unload the boat and take the triler and have it weighed then u can apply for a title transfer. It was a royal pain in the rear. I had a clear title but since it was from out of state i had to do all this. If the motor dont have a title there aint no way i would do it.

If you are going thru a credit union or a bank they will take care of the title. The only thing I had to do was have a background check on boat and trailer buy the IAD at the court house no problems at all. If it's over a sertain weight you will have to get it weighed but no big deal.

The motor is no big deal as long as its never been titled. All you gotta do for the motor is get form PWD 504 from twpd. You just have the previous owner sign the form and do a pencil trace of the serial number if possible. If you are unable to do a pencil trace you simply write the serial number in the box on form PWD 504.

They sent my title application back twice before they approved mine in austin. My trailer was for a 17 foot alum bass boat so weight shouldnt have been an issue

My trailer was titled in Louisiana when I bought. Went to get it transferred and they kept asking me what it weighed and what it hauled yada yada yada. I guestimated and that seemed to be fine with them. The trailer had to be done at the courthouse vs the boat having to be done at a TPWD approved courthouse.

There is an FAQ section at TP&W's website that covers a lot of the info you need. Might save you some headaches by going to the source.

I bought a boat in IL and TN doesnt require a title for the trailer, unless you take it out of state. The Credit Union said thats ok, but since I go to I had to registar it and they took care of the TX. Just had to show that I had paid them.

What's that supposed to mean fouzman? Yes they do a background to make sure it's not stolen and is clear title in that State I just did it.I work for Harris County and had the guy there do it for me. You can also have DPS IAD check when you get it weighed.

This as well I forgot about the pencil trace. The bank or credit union should give you the forum.

Grant and Neverenuff have got it right; but if you are paying cash they will put you through a little trouble.

Not going Sheb. Mike called this morning and cancelled due to the rain. Fine by me. Dr. JL went yesterday and had 47.5 lbs with an 11.5 big fish.
