Has anybody seen the recent advocating by some of the Pros for using heavy braided line for all topwater baits? I piddled with this concept a years ago and it didnt work out for me, particularly with the slower moving/pause baits. Faster moving baits well, I guess you "could" make a case for it in some cases (ripping frogs through the grass and the like)but for everything else I like my mono. Is anybody out there useing braid for spooks and poppers like I'm hearing from these recent advocates or are they just trying to sell line????

I've been using 30# braid on my top waters (Yellow Magics, spooks, etc.) for years -- wouldn't consider going back to mono.

30 lb braid is all I use for most topwaters. 65 lb for frogs.

Didnt you guys find the heavy braid sinking on slower presentations to be a pain in the A$$?

A buddy of mine uses a spinning setup with 20lb braid to fish the smaller poppers. It works for him, but I use mono.

I prefer it (braid) to flouro for spooks because it doesn't sink as fast. Don't know about mono, don't use it anymore.

I've been stuck to braid for a looong time now. I can't remember what I use for cranks and stuff but braid is the way to go! I haven't had any problems with it.

I believe the braid that I was useing to try this out with was power-pro, this was many years ago. And it would definatly bite into the surface on slower presentations. All of the mono that I use floats and it just works out better for me, and I havent looked back since.

I tried braid on my popper last summer at fork and I did not like the action that I got. I threw the line away so I do not remember what brand it was...but I only throw mono for my poppers. Frogs on the other hand....

Mono for Spooks and poppers it has stretch and floats .braid for frogs. Braid is to stout for baits with treble hooks and you will lose more fish.

I've been using power pro for years and havent ever had any that sinks. I do use it for topwaters, usually 30lb. 65lb for frogs. Using braid with trebles will work but you must have a rod with a parabolic bend IMO. My biggest problem with using braid on treble hooked baits is that the line fouls on the hooks more because it is so limber. When I really get frustrated I'll tie on a mono leader and it will alleviate the problem.

How in the world do some of you guys figure that mono gives your topwater more action than braid? 30# braid is a fraction of the diameter of 20# mono!! Mono is stiff, braid is soft and limber

My problem with it was the line I was using was not floating. Surface tension was causing it to sink.

I only use braid for frogs. Kinda like the stretch that mono has with hard topwaters.

Braid is an absolute must for floating frogs. Whaen I switched my hook-up rate went through the roof. The low stretch assures a solid hookset. And besides that, my favorite place to throw spros is on top of grass.

I couldnt agree more, as do pretty much everybody else on frogs. Its walking baits and poppers where we all have our various comfort zones.
