As I read this forum it appears that I will not buy a tying kit but a goods vise then tools a I need them. So after reading a few post and some review forums on these vises I was wondering what the owners think Of the danvise. I went to cabelas yesterday and talked to the guy and he should me all the vises but this one. I was wanting to stay in this range but am open to spend a little more. The peak vise is on the very to of my budget. He was telling me that the peak was great and that the griffin was the best in that price range. I am open you comments/suggestions would be great.
Thanks
Drew

All those other vises are completely fine and dandy. Good stuff. That being said, I have a Danvise that I've been tying with for years. I love it. My personal opinion here, I think it's up to the job and worth the price.

Danvise is the cheapest full rotary vise you can find on the market. I tend to bend the jaws every couple of years, but you can replace them for less than $20. I bend jaws tying flies on 6/0 and 7/0 hooks, it's not a quality issue.

I have no experience with the danvise so I can't really tell you much about it. You mentioned the peak. I have had both the nonrotary and currently the rotary. Both are outstanding vises. Have tied hundreds of flies on them with no issues. The standard jaws have worked very well and are still going strong after 2 years.2/0 to 18. so it gives you a good range of hook sizes. Before I picked up the peak I used a old regal that my father gave me. It also worked very well. never had a hook slide out on me with it and tied the same hook sizes. Just upgraded to a rotary vise was the only reason I got rid of it. Traded it on this forum to a member so it's still in use. And the peak nonrotary I donated to a WTU Soldier in the FT Hood Project Healing Waters Program. IMHO you can't go wrong with Peak, Regal, Danvise, Griffin, or Renzetti. Just need to find one that you like and in your price range.

X2 on the danvise. Take caution setting your hooks, as the jaws will flare if you crank down on it. The cam should have a little resistance, but not much, and your hook will be set just fine. Set larger hooks further back in the jaws. And if you need new ones, contact Al Beatty: albeatty2@aol.com
He will send you a new set of jaws, you send him the check. Great guy.

Inexpensive for a rotary, but materials don't hold up under pressure and over time. Bought one for my son, who is left-handed. He never used it, so I sold it. I would not recommend it.

If you are willing to spend the money for a Peak vise then I would suggest you do that. You get what you pay for. If you are not sure how much fly tying you will do and you think you will tie a small of fles per year then an inexpensive vise will likely work for you. If you start to get serious one hundred to two hundred flies per year is not very many. As you get more serious it gets easy to tie several hundred flies in a year. An inexpensive vise will be a disappointment to you then.

The Regal Medallion starts in the same price range as the Peak and it is easier to use. That is my first choice. I have that vise and I love it. I have also used the HMH Spartan vise for years. I still have it but prefer the Regal Medallion for ease of use.

I started tying in 1972 when there weren't all these choices. A guy bought a Thompson "A" or an imitation of it. I still have that original vise.

I have taught fly tying for many years so besides the vises I own I have had a chance to see and try a good number of other vises in class.

If you feel you will get serious about fly tying then think ease of use, and long term durability as you make a choice. Gulp a little on the price; you'll be glad you did.

I used a Danvise for more than 5 years, my chief complaint is that it is a bit cramp for larger hands or long fingers. The other issues of durability weren't too much of a problem. Excellent vise for the money. I recently cut over to a Griffin Mongoose and I am very happy with it. My fingers work much more freely around the jaws.

So your saying that my 6 foot 5 and 260 body maybe a little cramped. Good info cause I rely would not if thought about that

You must be my long lost twin biggerD. I'm 6'-5" and 260 myself. The longer thinner jaws and the longer extension of the Griffin really helps
