Saturday I made a trip to lake Somerville to investigate the creeks and see if any whitebass might have crossed the shallow flats at the upper end when it flooded last week. The lake has come up almost 4 feet since mid January but still remains at just over six feet below normal pool level. Read the report and see the video.

Too bad. Maybe we'll get more rain before this spawn passes up the yegua.

I've learned from the past that anytime up to about May if conditions allow the whitebass will head up the creek to spawn. In early April 2009 a flood came and went long after the usual end to the spawning run but the creeks filled up with whitebass anyway and many of those fish were trapped and eventually died as the summer heat dried up the smaller creeks.

how is the lake? can we get a boat in? if so where? can we cruise it safely in an 18 ft pontoon? Going to try and use the boat to get near the mouth of the river and possibly wade fish.

Ramps are open @ Rocky, Overlook, and Birch but as for wade fishing near the mouth of the river.. that ain't gonna happen. The whole upper end of lake Somerville is very shallow and covered with a foot or more of mud flats. You might have some luck trolling around snake island or tightline fishing ghost minnows on the bottom but I've never done well wade fishing this time of year at lake Somerville.. but maybe you know something I do not!

Any spawning stories yet? Lake or rivers? Just curious.

Weather.com is predicting 1-2 inches by noon tomorrow. They've already issued a flood warning, citing already saturated ground as the predicted cause. Things may be looking up for a Somerville run after all.

Was at the lake all day yesterday and this morning (left around noon). It is up for sure. The folks at Birch Creek Park were adding 1 inch gravel / rocks to the soft spots at the end of the boat ramps..getting them ready for use.
I didn't head to the creeks as I didn't have enough time. I did however send a few hours at the fishing jetty at the park and at Big Creek Marina..the bite was very slow.
There is still a small exposed area of land between Birch Creek Park and Pecan Lake. However, I would imagine it will be under water very soon with the rain that is going on now and will happen this evening and tomorrow.
IF we can get at least 1.5 inches or so of rain, the lake should come up another foot. The ground is very saturated!

OK. So we have had 2.31 inches of rain since yesterday afternoon. 1.45 inches fell this morning around 4am. Should bring the lake level up quite a bit. I would imaging the creeks will be running strong and should connect to the lake. See this from the weather service this morning:
Flood Warning for the middle yegua creek near Dime Box. * From this afternoon to late Tuesday night... or until the warning is cancelled. * At 0615 am Saturday the stage was 6.6 feet. * Minor flooding is forecast. * Flood stage is 10.0 feet. * Forecast... rise above flood stage by late this afternoon and continue to rise to near 11.6 feet by tomorrow evening. The river will fall below flood stage by Tuesday early afternoon. * At 10.0 feet... FM 141 below the confluence with west yegua creek is threatened and backwater flooding up west yegua and Turkey creeks in Lee County is likely.

Went to the lake below the dam and fished the point with some live shad. The only thing biting were the goo. Nice and cold as well. Planning on trying the lock and dam tomorrow.

So, with something like 3.5 inches in Lexington and I'm assuming similar amount in other nearby areas that drain into basins that feed Somerville, this should add maybe 2 or 3 feet to the lake?
Or maybe more like a foot?
Either way it's good news.
