he ran up a bit one of my old shoes today, and started yelping like it hurt, big time

Yep. Huyana had a heck of a time. Especially when her whole mouth was sore and it hurt to chew even her food. I felt so bad for my poor toothless puppy. Tends to happen generally around 5 to 6 months... ish. She'd lose a tooth and be sitting there whining and drooling blood. Scary the first couple times, but once we learned what was going on, its just another thing.

he is about 12 weeks old now

You're welcome.. You may want to look it up. Every dog is.different.. Inspect the inside of his mouth really good and make sure nothing is wrong, but at 12 weeks he's starting to get to the age where it'll happen. Good luck.

With my lab pup, we've found 3-4 puppy teeth laying on the floor after he's been gnawing on a chew toy so far. He's right at 5 mos old as well
