At a youthful 60, my wife now has a hankering for Margaritas, go figure! But...I'm one of those beer-only guys. I did a Google search, was totally overwhelmed, no surprise there. Surely the TFF is my best bet, you always are, and who wouldn't trust fishermen? Bring 'em on, got to be simple, consistent and TEXAS, looking for both frozen and on-the-rocks recipes. I'm thinking tequila, triple-sec, fresh lime, ice and salt, but don't really want to rely on a pre-mix, we have a well-equipped kitchen. Let me hear from my brethren,
Freddie M
P.S. I don't know jack about tequilas...

My Mexican restaurant clients all use Fanfare brand mix.

If you want GOOD tequila, you're going to pay over $100 a bottle.
Jose Cuervo is NOT good tequila. Porfidio is....but hard to find.

A REAL margarita has only three ingredients, one of which is not "mix."

Tequila, orange liqueur, and fresh squeezed lime juice.

I like Patron tequila, Cointreau and fresh squeezed lime juice in the following ration....

Three parts lime juice, two parts tequila and one part Cointreau. Or if you please, three ounces lime juice, two ounces tequila and one ounce orange liqueur.

You can substitute brands and types of tequila (anjeho, reposado, etc.), and/or orange liqueur, say Gran Marnier or other, but there is no substitute for fresh squeezed lime juice!

That Cazadores is good stuff for the money. Very similar to some of the higher end tequilas. Very smooth.

There's not only one margarita.

THE place for margaritas is Maria's in Santa Fe. They have a book of margarita recipes.

Riata in Fort Worth has a margarita using Don Julio 1942, expensive Gran Marnier($200 per bottle) and I think lime juice, cost per drink is $50.

The number one requirement is damn good tequila. Bargain priced tequila tastes like turpentine. I actually have a bottle that cost about $150. Obviously you keep that stuff hidden and only bring it out on very, very special occasions.

Google Marias and buy your Wife the recipe book. It's worth it.

BTW, 2 really good margaritas usually means don't even think about driving.

Once you find a margarita recipe you like try this. Add a splash (or shot) of Amaretto... it completely makes it another variation of a fantastic drink!

Any one else pro soda in their Rita?

I like mine as Tallgrass detailed but I'll do a splash of sprite as well. Well, 4oz or so. Someone introduced me to it about 10 years ago and it stuck. Said his wife liked hers "lite" and I agreed.

Good Tequila shouldn't be wasted in a Margarita. Use the cheap stuff. And fresh limes and aguave nectar make cheap Tequila taste pretty good.
