Anybody fish the Possum Kingdom Tailrace for trout? I know the next stocking is scheduled for Jan 31 2012- are the trout bigger than the local D/FW ones? Where is the best area below tairace to fish? Best baits/lures to try? Does the 2 pole per person apply? Appx. how long of drive from D/FW (Irving) is it? Best route to take? Thanks for the replies...

The Possum Kingdom Tailrace is a fun place to fish for trout. I have caught dozens there.

The next and last stocking is scheduled for next Tuesday, January 31.

The stocking is by the TPWD PK hatchery. The fish will be small. A 10 inch fish will be the largest you can expect, with many 6 - 8 inch fish.

The best area is the Highway 16 bridge on the downstream side. Walk down the boat ramp and turn left. About 50 yards from the ramp is a good spot.

The best lures are the smallest Super Duper, Panther Martin Spinners, and the Mepps Spinner. The silver and red and gold and red Super Dupers are best. The black Panther Martin with yellow spot is a good choice. The best bait is Berkley trout Power bait. Fish it with a small (#18 or 20) treble hook rigged with a 18 inch leader and a small weight so that the bait floats the hook. See my tutorial in my blog for details. .

The general regulations apply so there is no 2 pole limit. However, 2 poles are all you can properly watch. More than two means you are fussing with tackle instead of catching trout.

From Irving take I30 to Weatherford. At Exit 406 take Bowie Drive north to Highway 180 west. At Mineral Wells take FM1821 to US281. Go north on 281 to 254. Go west on 254 to Highway 16. Turn left on 16. The bridge over the river is about 5 miles. The trip is 101 miles and should take a little over 2 hours. See Google. .
