I used Vegas.com to book a trip, airfare, hotel package. You don't need a car. Take a taxi or shuttle to your hotel and then get 24-hour bus passes. They run up and down the strip 24-hours a day. Double decker buses. Riding the bus at 2am was pretty entertaining. Lots of people watching there. When you book a hotel, best to start out with something middle of the road to get your feet wet. We stayed at the Stratophere and it was borderline junk after going into the other strip hotels. Stay at the MGM, Treasure Island, Ceasars, Ney York New York. Everyone is going to have their favorite.
Don't forget to go downtown, it's pretty cool to see the old hotel/casinos. The Golden Nugget downtown looked pretty cool to stay at also.

3 days in vegas feels like 10 days anywhere else. IMHO a car is not needed. and if you take a cab from the airport tell him not to take the tunnel. It will end up costing you about another 20.... little trick they use.

I leave this afternoon for my 16th Vegas trip in the last 10 years. Here are a few random thoughts:
1) If this is your first time, you should really stay in the heart of the strip. It is easy to walk in both directions. Look into these hotels... Ceasars, Bellagio, Planet Hollywood, Paris (or something close). Planet Hollywood is nice enough and pretty reasonable.
2) Everything in Vegas is EXPENSIVE... really expensive. Gone are the days of the cheap quality meals, endless free booze, etc. Sure, there are still dumps that will have a $5.99 buffet, but I doubt that is what you are looking for. Someone that has never been to Vegas could spend a lot of time just walking through the hotels (It's free and some of them are pretty incredible). Your wife would enjoy the shopping...
3) Go check out Freemont. It's not my favorite, but something you should definetly see.
4) If you want to see a show, most of the Cirque de Soleil (sp?) shows are good. "O" at Bellagio is incredible. I am seeing Garth Brooks at the Wynn tomorrow night... I'll let you know how that goes.
5) Do not rent a car. Complete waste of money and incredibly inefficient.
6) There is a new sportsbook at Palazzo (Venetian's sister hotel). It is pretty cool if you like betting on sports. You can actually reserve a table, get food service and make bets from your table. This is a lot of fun during football season.
8) Booze... it's incredibly expensive. I'm kind of a liquor snob, but I can't justify spending $12+ for one drink. I usually buy a bottle at a liquor store and make my own drinks (there a no laws in vegas about drinking on streets. You can take any drink into any hotel at any time). There will be times that you will buy from a bar, but making your own drinks will save a little $$.
That's all i got now. If i think of something else, I'll let you know.

advice: if you aren't taking kids, fly there. Very true! Be warned that distances out there are deceiving. If someone tells you the next casino is just a couple blocks away, get a cab. The blocks on the strip are as big as a county here in Texas. If I was going in the summer I'd stay downtown. The casinos aren't as flashy, but you can go from one to the other with no problem.

Anybody stay at the platinum? We're going in march, reviews? And wondering if it's close enough to walk places with ease?

I usually try to stay at Bally's. It's older but you can get good deals, it's at a good location on the strip and you can get the monorail out back. It's not nearly as run down as the other older places nearby. People don't like the monorail but I use it quite a bit when I'm there to move up and down the strip. If you want to use the monorail at all, stay at a hotel on that side of the street. Bally's also has a nice sports book. The sports book at the Wynn is incredible.
Don't stay at Excalibur - it's overrun with kids. Don't stay at Luxor or Mandalay - it's too much trouble to get to the main strip from there because you have to ride their private monorail over to Excalibur and it's usually packed like sardines in that thing.
I wouldn't stay at Hard Rock or anything over by the Rio - it's too far off the strip.

Southwest has its early booking fares every now and then. Not sure when they are, but keep an eye out for them. It's a cheap way to get there.
A year ago, I stayed at Rio. It was nice, but it is off the Strip. The sports book was awesome. We got there early for a full day of Saturday College football, made a few bets, and got free drinks the entire day!
Have fun, and remember, it is cool and adviseable to walk away when you are up!

Staying on the strip was a beating for me, traffic, noise everything is more expensive there. It’s fun to do it once just to say you’ve stayed at one of those famous hotels but I greatly prefer older Vegas on Freemont Street, the 4 Queens, Binion’s etc. They might be below the standards of sum (typically 3 stars) but your money goes a lot further. 4 Queens is very liberal with the suite upgrades, slip the desk clerk a 20 and most times they’ve had no problem moving us into one of the large suites. Be sure you DO NOT get a room that overlooks Freemont Street if you plan on getting any sleep, the lights and noise don’t stop.
If you are a serious blackjack player, old Vegas is the only place to play much better house rules and fewer clueless tourists.
2) Everything in Vegas is EXPENSIVE... really expensive. Not sure where they’ve taken away the free booze, you can sit at low limit slot machines and drink all you want as long as you’re gambling in all the casinos I’ve been too. I agree there are tons of fun free things to do just walking through hotels, check out cheapovegas.com.
3) Go check out Freemont. It's not my favorite, but something you should definitely see.
Agreed, but stay out of Glitter Gulch.
4) If you want to see a show, most of the Cirque de Soleil (sp?) shows are good. "O" at Bellagio is incredible. I am seeing Garth Brooks at the Wynn tomorrow night... I'll let you know how that goes.
I absolutely hated O, goofy clowns, psychedelic transgendered acrobats, and some dudes naked butt. Ghey.
Believe it or not, Phantom of the Opera at the Venetian is beyond incredible, the entire auditorium is part of the show, the talent and production is one of the most amazing spectacles you’ll ever witness.
5) Do not rent a car. Complete waste of money and incredibly inefficient.
I COULD NOT DISAGREE MORE. Getting anywhere by bus in that town is a nightmare, it’s not fun to have a 500lber in a mumu suffocating you with overly generous sideboob, especially when you aren’t exactly a featherweight yourself. Parking is free, or extremely easy to validate wherever you go. Ask most any concierge and they will hook you up.
The drive to the Hoover Dam, and even to the South End of Grand Canyon is awesome and an easy day trip.

how far is the Hoover Dam or the Grand Canyon? Just curious... prolly wont go to either. I'm pretty much just gonna get hammered... one night anyways... try not to get arrested... see the sights, lose a lil money, come back home so I can get on another place and go out of country for the first time.

DON'T rent a car. You won't need it and it will cost you a fortune to park it at the hotel.
DON'T ride the bus. It stops every 40 feet (practically) and will take you forever to get from the strip to downtown.
DO take cabs every where. It's reasonable, easy and fast.
DO see Hoover Dam. Your hotel concierge can hook you up with a tour and transportation. Its worth every penny.
Stay on the strip, visit downtown for a afternoon and evening. You'll want to check out the Freemont experience after dark (cool special effects over head) --FREE Go to the Golden Gate hotel and eat $2.99 shrimp cocktail. It's good and you'll need the iron.
See a show.
Cross only at crosswalks- anywhere.
Stay out of dark alleys.
Watch for the C.O.P.S. cameras. You can be a star.
