Me and a couple of buddies are wanting to take a trip this summer to Matagorda. We want to do some surf fishing, shark mainly, and we were wanting to camp out on the beach. Does anybody know if they allow that or any places to check out might be. We ussually go to Galveston but I've heard really good things about Matagorda and we want to give it a try. Any tips would be appreciated.

Pitch your tent facing inland to avoid sand blowing in. Keep a tub of water at the entrance to dip your feet in and remove the sand. Apply baby powder/talcum powder before bed time. Pitch the tent well above the high tide mark. You'd be amazed at the number of people I see sleeping in their cars at first light while their tents are flooded.

Follow the above advice plus pack extra mosquito killa in case of slack or North winds. You need a Matagorda County Beach Permit to ACCESS the beach and the access is across from the LCRA Nature Center. You can buy the permit at the only gas station/grocery in Matagorda, but I forget the name. Keep an eye out for news of beach/sand conditions, even 4x4s can get stuck, but even 2xs can maneuver fine: depends on conditions, vehicle and driver.

Matagorda is great. Some more advice would be to bring some larger tent stakes, as the wind can get pretty bad at times. Enjoy, Matagorda is my favorite place to go on the coast.

The shark fishing is phenomenal during the summer... I know they're out there during the winter, but they are much less prevalent when kayaking BTB during the winter... One of the ONLY reasons I'd prefer to BTB during the winter...

I will say the wind, mosquitos and jackwagons that like to 4 wheel and shoot their guns at 2 am sorta turned me off to camping there. Used to camp out at 3 mile lake and kayak- very cool but the visitors we had on multiple trips turned me off. Oh yeah, the mosquitos can be just plain rediculous....
