Brian, I've got a 1/2" net, it's a little heavier than I like to throw much, but you weed out a bunch of the little shad with it. I've also got a 5/8" mesh net, but at 1.5# to the foot, I really have to want big shad to toss it much.

I throw a 1/2" Bait Buster most of the time now. It sinks faster than the 3/8" net. It lets most of the smaller threadfins pass through. It will gill the 3" to 4" baits though. Most of the time I'm not throwing where I'm marking the threadfins anyway so I don't worry about it very much.

I don't know if I could tell the difference between threadthin and gizzard shad on the sonar.

A 1/2" mesh net should be the same price or less expensive than a 3/8" net. Less mesh = less cost. It's pretty easy to tell the difference on the fish finder. Just pay attention to what you see on the screen when you catch bait.

You would think that but the 1/2" joy fish nets are more expensive than the 3/8" @ justcastnets.com

Try a 1/2" Mako. They're cheaper and use the same size mono as the joy net. Only difference is the lead line. The mesh size should sink as fast as your other Joy net.
