I don't do much creek fishing cause i really don't like snakes . But with rain moving in and creeks running i would like to go . With this very warm winter so far do yall think snakes are still sleeping ? I have encounters every year with the nasty and scary no leg having critters but creeks are by far the place i see them most . Any way what are your thoughts ? still sleeping or waiting for me ?

They aren't going to be in the water. They may be out sunning, but I still have not seen any. This time of year that is really all they will be doing is sunny. I could be wrong.

During the winter, they are usually hiding and sleeping...Ive been to some creeks this winter and have not seen any...with the warmer temps, they probably are still on the lethargic side, and not ready anyway to go too far from their hole...your probably safe anyhow,....wear some good rubber boots too!

I've been in a kayak several times this winter at two different creeks and haven't seen a single one yet. Not even sunning. Water temp is upper 40's to lower 50's. I advise you to do like Fishinelectrican said and wear some boots or snake chaps. Problem solved!!
On a different note, I will die of a heart attack if one decides to get in the kayak with me this Spring.

This time of year they are very dangerous. On the warmer days, they will come out, and they will just lay there. They will not take off as you approach as they do not feel your vibrations on the ground very well as you come by. This is when they get stepped on. That is when they bite. Pay very close attention to where you are walking. The creek I usually fish in winter has a bunch of cottonmouths. I see them every year as the weather gets warmer. That is about the time I usually stop walking that creek because I tend to walk through some pretty thick stuff. Wear a good boot, and again, pay close attention to where you are putting your feet down. Snakes are not going to be agressive. They just won't take off like they would in warmer parts of the year.

Well maybe i should take a fishing buddy and send him in first . I'm not sure why I'm so scared of them but when i see them i have a tendency to let out a scream and run like hell . Last year i was night fishing in a cove and pulled up close to the bank set lights out about that time i spotted one coming to the boat . My buddy and his young son was with me and i didn't relize it at the time but i picked his son up by his life jacket and used him like a sheild . My buddy whooped the fire out of it with a fishing pole till it left thats when i relized his boy was screaming cause i was swinging him side to side . We got a good laugh out of it . Then i moved the boat to deeper water . That my freinds is just 1 story with me and snakes . All my hunting and fishing buddy's sit at the camp fire and tell ( to them ) funny stories about me and snakes . If any of yall are down at the creeks on Hwy 34 and see a dude running by .... Look out i saw a snake . Lol good luck to all and go limit out

My dad just had a goat bitten by a rattler this past weekend. Mind you he lives on a white rock hill no where near a creek. There are a bunch of dens up on the hill and on warm sunny days they are out sunning trying to get warm.

An Outdoorsman should expect to see critters in the woods. Let them be. Give snakes their space and don't kill them. But yes do kill poisonous snakes around inhabited areas.

As a Outdoorsman i do expect to see critters in the woods or at the lake but i figure if i pick my timing to be at such places maybe i won't take the chance of jacking with a snake . Spring on my boat sand Bassin ,Summer night fishing in deep water , Fall deer blind ( 16 ft in the air not a ground blind ) Winter Creeks or if water in the lake at the boat slip Crappie fishing . Thats why i was wondering with warm weather would the snakes be out . I know the creek will be running after all this rain so I'm going for it .. Or maybe find some shad and fish where the creek feeds the lake either way it's time to fish
