January 22,2012 Sometimes you have to throw the rule book away and try something different. Southeast Texas is having a heat wave in the middle of winter. Some welcome rain in a severe drought, and Spring winds 20 mph+ in a heavy fog. How could things be any worse?? The fish have to eat, they are not going to starve to death. The fish are there, they just are not in the same places they were last year. Started in the Neches River, worked the North End of Sabine Lake (kind of choppy with a 15mph south wind). Worked our way up the Sabine River, and back to the Neches River. Clear water was the most productive. Clear is relative this time of year to adjacent waters. Everything we caught in water from 4' - 12' deep. Working marsh drains along the river worked well. Soft plastics 1/8 to 1/2 oz., everything from Texas Trout Killers, Hackberry Hustlers, Gulps, 3" to 5" paddle tails, and Bass Assassins worked. Sometimes the Speckled Trout would hit working fast, and sometimes a slow retrieve worked. The fish are there, but we had to work for most of them. We kept 1 Redfish, and 2 limits of Specks, threw back about 20 more Specks, and lost a couple of nice 20"+ at the boat. Some of the Specks looked like they were full of mud. After looking closer, they were full of bait fish almost completely digested (talk about a mess everywhere). Anyway, don't let the weatherman scare you into not going fishing if it looks uncomfortable. The Winter fishing can be some of the best of the year. www.luckylindycharters.com
