Do any of y'all make your own lures? I tie my flies for fly fishing. It's a great feeling when you catch a fish with a fly that you tied yourself.
Well here lately I've thought it would be pretty cool to make my own worms/craws. Maybe even to poor my own jigheads.
Do any of y'all do this already?

Jig heads are VERY cheap to buy! Pouring lead is dangerous and rather costly.

I suggest you ditch the idea of pouring lead (unless your heart is really set on it) and buy the jig heads. You can then tie on feathers, hair, pipe cleaners, etc.

And good luck to ya!! thumb

I've molded shrimp tails for years for saltwater. Sandjohnny pours no rolls and makes the best slabs and tail spinners you will ever drop in the water. I'd bet if you contacted him he could inform you all about pouring jig heads. His link is in my sig.

I tie my flies and jigs, but I buy the jig heads just because it's cheaper to buy than make. I have been thinking about smelting for slabs and maybe do my own umbrella rig. Those add up fast when left in something on the bottom. I do agree, it is awesome to limit out using my own custom jig that I tied.

I'm really interested in getting an airbrush so I can customize my hardbaits.

Yea I wouldn't be doing this to save money but instead the pleasure of catching bass on lures I built myself.

Dean- you and me both. I've seen blank crankbaits/swimbaits that you can buy and paint yourself. If you do get in to that you had better post the pictures. smile

I recently bought a book on carving your own baits. I started carving this past year and plan on trying it soon. If I do I will post some pics. I agree though Shaun, just the idea of catching a fish on something I hand made gets the blood flowing.

Shaun, making jigs is fairly easy, look at Barlows tackle, they are located in Richardson but on the web as well. They have the jig heads and skirt material. also shows you how to build them.

As for pouring worms, they have the supplies for this as well, but please wear gloves if you go this route. I have some major burn scares from the melting plastic, it get hot.

For hard baits let me know what you guys want, I prodce wood plugs, top water mainly, but could custom build you something if needed.
