The rod and the line are the most important. If it says 7/8 you are better of with a 7wt rod. Check bass pro and Cabelas, but try no to go too inexpensive, or it will just frustrate you.

Is there a line on the reel? Reels will show up to three different line weights that can be used. Lines are rated at one size. Depending on what I am fishing for and where I am fishing I tend to choose a reel that will hold a good amount of backing. If the reel is rated for 7/8 then I would put a 7 weight line on it. As far as the reel goes it really is a matter of space management since the heavier the line is the more space it takes and the less backing you can put on.

In terms of balancing things the line and the rod need to be balanced. If there is a line on the reel then get a rod that matches that line weight. If not I would suggest getting the 7 weight.

As to rods, consider some of St. Croix's entry level rods.

Good luck with your new adventure.

You might want to stop by Cabelas and check with one of the guys in the fly fishing shop about one of the Three Forks Rods. He could also sell you a good line to use for your outfit. You might want to bring your reel with you and ask him to load the line on the reel for you. I am not sure if they have a beginning fly fishing class or not, but that would be a good place to start to learn. I think the Bass Pro shop in Grapevine still has free beninning classes each Saturday.

Have fun with this stuff.
