Need to drain a H2O Heater, I either have a bad element or need to replace. How do I drain ALL of the water out? When I try to loosen up the element more water wants to come out.

hook a hose to the hose bib at the bottom, crack the water line at the top to allow air in the tank, if its corroded be careful.
unhook the breaker (pull breaker) first.
do not turn on electricity until ALL air is run out through a hot water faucet in the house.
you gotta crack the water line pretty good to allow enough air in too, oh and TURN OFF THE WATER. (had to toss that in).

Why open the water line? Opening the safety pressure valve on top will do the job with the flick of a thumb.

I changed the bottom element on my electric water without draining the water. I only lost about a pint of water. Just have you new element ready to stab the second the old one is removed.

You got lucky! Mine had a bunch of soot in the botom that had hardened around the bottom element! The "rod" and a chunk on it and it would not fit thru the hole!

1 Pint x100!!! Got the old one screwed in after lots of time =(

I then put this thread up, Cracking the inlet nut did the trick and let the last of the H2O drain!

Thanks Hop!!!

If you had sediment down in the bottom, I'd leave the drain open and run some water in it to try to flush that carp out. As soon as it covers up the bottom element again you will be replacing it again.

Wrong

Don't touch the T&P Valve, I have seen them start leaking when they get used. And I mean many times

OK I am about to do mine so you're saying turn off the water to the house and drain do not open up the valve on top of the water heater? Do you also need to turn off the electricity to the water heater before changing an element? Yes it's not a gas water heater. Thanks

TURN OFF ALL BREAKERS to the water heater or you risk DEATH.
to drain crack the water line at the top, not the pressure relief valve, then open the hose bib (have a hose hooked up and run outside).
install element then reverse the directions, fill with water before turning on breakers or you could burn out the element you just installed.
