If you want to stick with a baitcast style Cabelas had a low profile baitcast called EZ Cast on sale, thru last week anyway. Has an anti backlash devise you can engage. Saw a demo of it on youtube also. The guy cast the bait against a wall about 15' away without thumbing the spool. No backlash. Might make your learning curve a little easier.

Smoothest , easiest casting reels I've ever thrown were curados .... Cant say they won't backlash but if you have it set properly it's pretty tough

In my experiences. Most if not all of my backlashes are due to spool speed. (If the rate of the spool is turning faster than the amount of line being feed) I would suggest 1 of 2 options to get use to bait casters. 1. A. For casting. Side arm overhead.Adjust the tension and brake until the chosen bait will not fall freely. But not to tight. Just enough to where if you lightly shake the tip it falls @ reasonably and consistent speed. B. When you hit the water. Make a few practice cast starting soft gradually giving some ump w/each upcoming cast. Cast and tune/adjust tension/brake w/each cycle until your comfortable with the rate of line and distance.
2. A. Pitching, or short distance casting. Do the same as you stated above. Only difference is that you want your chosen bait to start falling as soon as you engage the reel. Get it to where it starts slow and barely gains speed on the fall. B. Do the same as B. above w/the exception of you want it to cast with more of a lob with out having to give any ump than necessary.
Granted that wind speed, tip speed, line size and the quality of the bait caster dose have a role in backlashes as well. Once you get use to casting/lobing then try braking w/your thumb. But all in all the more time on the water and practice will help out tremendously. Hope this helps in your struggle.
As for myself I use Steez 103's and TD-Z ito's. Might be out of your price range. A good mid range reel might try a a E series Curado. I've heard they are pretty good for the price. If you don't mind taking the side plate off to adjust the brakes.

Yep, just practice. All my bass reels are h20 express mettles. I have the spool tension adjusted correctly, and I can cast as hard as I can, into the wind and not backlash. It's all about practice and proper settings. The mettles are only 50 retail, and occasionally go on sale for 25 bucks.

My curados are probably the easiest casting reels I have. Turn on all your centrifugal breaks and tighten that tensioner knob up just a bit and it'll cast anything! (within reason of course)

Buy a reel with dual braking....some BPS reels have it and some Brownings that I know of. They have two adjustments....two dials...magnetic and centrifugal.....one gives more adjustment to the tension as the lure is first cast and the other slows the line down at the end of the cast. They are very easy to learn to use. You will find them easier than most reels......If you can't learn with these reels, get an open faced spinning reel.

My take: The Shimano Callisto is a great starter reel! My wife used these when she made the switch to a baitcaster, and I do not ever recall her getting a backlash. Amazon has a great deal on them now: http://www.amazon.com/Shimano-Callisto-B...360&sr=1-15Just as others have said, baitcasters = backlashes sometimes. It takes practice, but it's also important to familiarize yourself with how to utilize your braking system based on lure weight, wind speed etc.

Just take the ones you have make one good, long cast and with the line out place a small piece of tape right in the middle of the spool right onto your fishing line, then reel line up cast again, again and again. You will eventually get the hang of it.

Shimano Core100, I taught my wife how to cast one in 20 minutes. Pretty steep price point, but worth it if you really want to make the switch.

us reels are very very anti backlash, I have 9 now and am upgrading my entire system to us reels. check them out at usreels.com I swear by them, low profile, less back lash and even if you do get a wind knot, it comes out a lot easier. pm me if you need details

Get out in your yard and Practice. That is all it takes. When you get good at, you will not want to use anything else but a baitcaster.
