Which size bait for bigguns "Does Size Matter?"

Saw a crappie show on tv last night. Prefishing Truman for a tournament. The pro was fishing trees and brushpiles in what looked to be 12-16 or so feet (not extremely deep) with a big 1/4 oz. jig with a 3 inch tube claiming it eliminates the small ones. He was only looking for a heavy 7 fish bag. In my own experience I haven't noticed much of a relatioship to crappie size and bait size, but he's the pro. Caught bigguns both ways but more with smaller 1/16 or 1/8 jigs in that depth. Any opinions on that strategy?

so, you're basically asking: does size matter?

I think this would be a good tactic for a pro. He saves time by not dealing with the smaller fish that won't help him win a tourney. For the average weekend fisherman I would think you'd want to catch all the fish you can and throw back the ones you won't eat.

I was pushin 3 5/8" proto type super Bandits this morning running 1/4oz 3/0 blk sickles 1 1/2 lb fish could handle it quite well had a hundred hit short on it,but everytime you reeled 1 in it was a weigh fish were in the early testing stages of super baits started about 1 year ago, past few weeks on Greneda,Ms 3-4 shinners and shad have been the ticket.

I don't fish for crappie with anything less than a 1/4 jig 99% of the time. I will say, I can't remember the last time I caught a crappie that wasn't a keeper though.

Sounds like there may be something to the super baits for super crappie. Anyone know if Westlake carries the 3 5/8 size? Think I'll give it a try.

No There still in the testing stages Theres alot of design requirements when your pushing or pulling a large chunck of plastic at various depths the main concern is flow control were getting close.Their catching and producing good fish we need to do more shallow water tesing under bobbers for the mid west Folks.

Been using finesse jigs on 1/16th oz head the past two weeks. the shiny pure silver color seems to catch nothing but slabs. use all silver/chrome jig heads with it as well. in my experience colors that are on fire for a couple weeks and are producing good fish turn off adruptly and seems only the dinks will hit it. Dont know if size really matters, i believe it depends on alot of different factors on what they will bite. certainly isnt the ole saying the bigger the bait the bigger the fish. I have caught tons of nice slabs on 1/32 jig head paired with southern pros tiny crappie stinger jigs. two days ago fish were biting real slow even the very small ones. little to no action period. i swithched from BG to the stingers and started catching fish immediatly. Most were throwbacks about a 10 to 1 ratio but i was catching fish as fast as i could get that light jig back to the bottom which took a very long time

Do the solid bodies that large weigh too much and create problems with the action/control? Would hollow bodies work better in super sizes?

I like a smaller bait in cold water. But when it warms up, maybe not a heavier weight, depends on depth, but I do like a larger profile.

The deeper the water the bigger the jig I use. I seldom use any jig head over 1/8 ounce. I was fishing for large fish only I could see the need in using a large bait. Since I fish for fun I want whatever I can get.
