In the fall I will be making my first trip to Yellowstone. I need to buy the equipment to make the trip. I do not have any equipment, so I need everything. Also I have never fly fished. Can you all help me with my list of what I will need. Like what rod wt. line, waders, boots, flys and ect. Thanks in advance for your help.

I would make to trip to the Orvis store in Dallas. Go to www.orvis.com. You can get directions there. I have used their equipment for years and it is quality stuff. I have a 9', 5 wt, Clearwater II. Best rod on the market for the $. These folks can help you get set up right. Paul

Can you make it over to Bonham state park tomorrow? The Red River Rendevouz will be going on. It is primarily a fly tying event, but TFO will be there with their demo rods, so you'll be able to cast and compare different rods to help decide what you like. Come and find me and I'll help you to start learning to cast. There will be a lot of folks there that can answer your questions and the trip would definately shorten your learning curve.
As mentioned, fly shops like Orvis or Tailwaters can help and another option is Bass Pro regularly has introduction to fly fishing classes for free on Saturday mornings.
Good luck, Rex

Go to Tailwaters in Dallas, the guys there are better than the Orvis employees imo

Hop on I-30, first stop Bass Pro in Garland . Then on around to downtown Dallas and Tailwaters Then on up N. Dallas Tollway Orvis and after you are done there, hop on up to Cabelas in Allen. From there its a skip on up to 380 and back to Greenville. Of course you may want to take a couple days to see it all...The full tour of Dallas area stores. There is always Backwoods over in Cowtown as well..... it never ends

Buy the basic equipment here in Texas, by that I mean rod, reel, line, backing, etc.... But in my opinion, buy the flies at a fly shop near Yellowstone....they will give you the best possible advice for those waters....also get a book called the L.L. Bean FLy Fishing Handbook, the second addition, which is just a more updated version, and read and re-read it. I am still a learning fly fisherman .... But these things are what have helped me greatly improve.
Hope this helps

I would definately second texasbassin. I did a trip thru Yellowstone and up to montana a few years ago when I was green to flyfishing. The best thing I did was find a few fly shops on the way and just go in and talk to them. Buy a few flys they recommend and you'll usually get some good pointers. If you have till the fall before you go you might want to invest in getting a guide to show you the ropes on a river around here. I'd suggest Tarponfly, he's on a lot of the bank fishing posts. This way you learn how to flyfish but also what to look for while your out there. I would say get some practice up on the LMF river in OK. Not sure about the best fly gear but I used a 6wt with something like 6 lb test Tippett and also invest in some neoprene waders they helped a lot.

I used to live about an hour outside of the park but only fished the park itself a few times. Lots of good rivers up there. Definitely buy the flies local. Which part of the park will you be spending time in? There is a fly shop in Island Park, Idaho that is owned by Mike Lawson who also wrote some very helpful books on fishing the Henry's Fork and other rivers in that area. His advice applies to the rivers in the park as well. Are you going back country at all?
