I've typically used a 5 gear reel for these baits, but recently have switched over to a 6:4:1 reel. Just curious what others use when throwing the shallower cranks.

I throw square bills on a 7:1. I can always slow down when I need to. But a lot of my shallow cranking is when we are on the move. So the faster ratio allows me to keep up while power fishing.

I use a 6.4 for shallow's, only use the 5's for deep stuff.

6.2:1 for square bills and mid depth. 5.0:1 for deep stuff. Sometimes a 5.0:1 on mid depth. Just depends on the area I'm fishing.

5:1. Still like the low gears on square bills.

6.2 or 7:1 for shallow cranks, Traps. slower reel for spinnerbaits, big cranks.

5/4 and 6/4 and 15 lb w/7 ft med/hvy

6.4:1 for square bill 1.5's on a 7' med rod

6:3:1.

I use a 6:3 on shallow...when it gets past about 8-10ft...I go with either a 5:1 or a 5:3...just because its soo much easier to work if you are throwing them for any length of time.

I feel like I have a better feeling of the bottom and bites when I have a lowe ratio reel, may just be a mind thing, but oh well.
