Banked Lavon last night. IN SHORTS AND A FREAKING T-SHIRT!!! What is wrong with this picture? It's January isn't it? Did pretty good: some nice box fish, a new PB 26lbs blue and one freak accident.

As I was reeling in the last pole I got hung on a log or something...or so I thought. The log started to swim off... I had to tighten my drag a ton just to turn the log's head. When I finally got it into the shore-break I could see that my log was a giant carp/buffalo thing.(I'm not too good with my rough fish ID's) My 8/0 circle had some how foul hooked it into the top of it's tail. It went berserk when I waded over to it and slipped the hook. I'm not a good judge of carp/buffalo weights but I'm thinking it was between 50-60 pounds. Nice little send off for a night's fishing.

I realized two things last night: Global warming is sweet and I really need some fish gloves. I didn't realize how hard a 26 pound cat can bite...

Very cool. I've only fished Lavon once. I went to the creek under the dam and didn't even get a bite. Then I went to the power plant and caught a 2-pounder. My buddy reeled in his line to check bait and foul-hooked a 10 lb buffalo through the top fin. Only fish we ever caught there! I want to go back sometime but have no idea where to find deep water from the bank. Any suggestions?

You can reach lake bottom from most of the points on Lavon within 50-75 yards. Always cast into the wind. I use windfinder.c0m to check the wind forecasts. I do best from the bank on the third or fourth day of steady winds in the same direction.

if it was a carp or buffalo.. it would have been a lavon record? heck of a catch for sure though!! thumb

unless foul hooking doesnt count as a record? then ill just keep my mouth shut

Yeah I think you're right about the record. Not sure about the foul hook thing though, that's a good question.

Anybody know if a foul hooked fish counts toward a record?

It was a pretty sweet way to cap off the night. I'm thinking that the next time I get into a fish that big I'll wade out before I get them in too close. Since I've sized up to 8/0 circles I've started thinking about landing gear for larger fish. I know the carp guys have some pretty good setups for reducing stress on large fish landed from the bank.

I don't think a foul hooked fish counts as a record.
