This is the second one I shot in the head so again, mounting it was out of the question unfortunately, but I would have loved to have him in the living room. I shot him with that AR-15 with a 40 gr ballistic tip at about 150 yds and that was the end of it. So in short, I do nothing with them. They are a nuisance to us because they try to tunnel into our damn at the ranch. A while back we had a dam wash out because of those dang things so we shoot on sight now.

Hmmm, someone is going to have to show me how to clean one, those things smell awful. I've not even tried to clean one.

Hmmm? Strange how some people think. It's OK to shoot a human that is breaking into your house to do damage to your property, but it not OK to shoot an animal that is doing basically the same thing.

Poor beaver! Just trying to live his life the way he knows best unaware that he is doing something wrong to someone with an AR-15. Probably left behind a wife beaver and little fatherless beaverettes.

That's a beast! I would think the pelt would have been worth some money. You should try to hook up with a trapper or someone that knows how to properly tan their hides. You might be able to pay for your ammo.

i have tried to shoot them with buckshot from a 12 guage and it didnt phase them at 20 yds.. i was reluctant to use a rifle because of all of our horses out there. But they did the same thing to one of our ponds last year. Called a beaver trapper.. nice little trap with spikes that came down on thier little heads and or necks.. did the trick.

We have the same problem at our ranch. They fill the overflow from the upper lake to the lower with debris and mud. One good rain and the dam gets washed out. We hired a local to trap them. Doesn't cost a thing as he takes his payment from their hides.

Vigilance is the key. Our lower lake washes out into the North Fork of the Trinity which is where these beaver keep coming from. Give them one month to themselves and you've got a mess to deal with. However, I will admit that by clearing some of the small timber around the edges these beaver have given me some new spots to cast from. wink

You can use the musk glands to trap other beavers.

I'm confused about the kid getting them mounted. Nothing wrong with killing a nuisance Beaver. I've done so myself. But isn't it against the law to "retain" them?

Ok, I found the regulations. This may help to keep some of you out of trouble.

MEANS AND METHODS
Furbearing animals may be legally taken with firearms; foothold, conibear style, live or box traps; dogs; snares; lawful archery equipment; electronic or handheld calls; artificial light; or by falconry except as prohibited below.
EXCEPTIONS
It is illegal to:
• Shoot at, take or attempt to take any furbearing animal from a boat on public waters in Texas. • Take furbearing animals by means of falconry
without a valid falconry permit issued by the
department. • Take furbearing animals with a foothold or
conibearstyle trap except during the season for
commercial harvest. • Take furbearing animals with a foothold or
conibearstyle trap within 400 yards of any school. • Use smoke, explosives or chemical irritants of any
kind to harry or flush furbearing animals. • Take furbearing animals with conibearstyle traps with a diagonal opening greater than 10 inches set on land or in less than 6inch deep water. • Take furbearing animals with snare, foothold, conibearstyle trap, and live or box trap unless such devices are examined at least once every 36 hours and animals are removed on discovery.
SALE OR PURCHASE OF FUR BEARING ANIMALS OR PELTS
• Furbearing animals and their pelts can only be sold by:
(1) licensed trappers; (2) wholesale fur dealers; (3) furbearing animal propagators.
• Furbearing animals and their pelts can only be purchased for resale by wholesale fur dealers. • Furbearing animals and their pelts may be
purchased by consumers only for personal use
(no resale). • Trappers may sell nonliving furbearing animals
or their pelts taken during commercial harvest at
any time during the year. • Live furbearing animals may be sold only by a
licensed furbearing animal propagator, and only sold to persons authorized by permit issued by the department or to another licensed furbear ing animal propagator.
• A person who sells furbearing animals prepared for immediate consumption may purchase the carcass of a furbearing animal only from a wholesale fur dealer.
• A wholesale fur dealer may purchase the carcass or pelt of a furbearing animal at any time, provided it was lawfully taken during the com mercial season.
• Furbearing animals offered for sale may only be taken during the commercial season.
• Finished products may be sold by anyone. • No person may purchase, possess after purchase or transport for commercial purposes a pelt or carcass taken in this state unless the person has acquired
and possesses a wholesale fur dealer’s license. • A trapper may sell the carcass or pelt of a fur bearing animal only to a wholesale fur dealer or a puchaser outside Texas. Trappers selling fur bearing animals to purchasers outside Texas must complete and submit an annual
report accounting for all sales out of state.
A report on a form provided by the department must be completed and filed with the department on or before May 31 by holders of wholesale fur dealer’s licenses. Licensed furbearing animal propagators must file reports by August 31 of each year. Failure to meet these reporting requirements will prevent renewal of the dealer or propagation license.
NUISANCE FURBEARING ANIMALS
Landowners or their agents may take nuisance fur bearing animals in any number by any means at any time on that person’s land without the need for a hunting or trapping license. However, furbearing animals or their pelts taken for these purposes may not be retained or possessed by anyone at any time except licensed trappers during the lawful open season and possession periods.
Nuisance furbearing animals may be captured and relocated if the person has received authoriza tion from the department and the owner of the property where the release will occur. A monthly report is required and must be submitted to the department on number and kind of furbearers captured, location of release site, name and address of person authorized to release.
