I thought maybe we could get a post going to refer back to and to add to over time to inform people of when, where and how to use what lure. For example:
Winter = Dead Sticking/ Slow rolling soft plastics such as _______ in depths of _____ during the months of _________.
Spring = ______ lures with _____ technique in ____ depths with _____ technique.

I assume the lure makers and the guides would have lots of info with the addition of all us hard core guys and what everyone likes. I assume opinions vary.

If this is a bad idea just respond with a delete thread request and I'll get this taken off.

My hope is to learn during the different times of the year, what lures to use, in what depths and with what technique. Thought it would be helpful for all.

Winter - Moe's tackle
Spring - Moe's tackle
Summer - Moe's tackle
Fall - Moe's tackle

If that don't work then you need more diet milk

Well I've seen a slab work dang near year round now. Burn it, lift it, chunk it, wind it, hold it! Seems that might be the go to year round lure.

Now if ya want big uns, change to flukes during the winter and hang the $"@ on!!!

This is not to be a WHOSE lure to use but WHAT lure and when. People can decide where to buy, I just wanted this to be what to buy. The list Duck posted is great. I'm sure others have a preference too. How is yours different, If it is?

Might as well jump in on this...I got "hooked" on Bomber Rattle RRRA Crankbaits 25 years ago. then they quit making them. Oh I know..they are just like...___________ _______________ ___________ or ____________.

But they ain't. There is something about them that works...year round. I use them on about every species...Largemouth killer...smallies...white bass...wipers...

They work....good luck finding them. I've got a stockpile of about 60 of them...if anyone has any...I'll take 'em!

I personaly use a ton of moestackleshop baits...and looking forward to using the Godfather slab this spring and summer when the slab fishing starts to pay off better...right now if you want big fish and this is big fish time go with soft plastics...I don't type or spell well enough to go into detail about all the baits and patterns...but don't mind sharing what my little pea brain has retained over the years so you will have to call me...are book a trip and we can talk about it all day long!!

Talking about slabs...does anyone remember the spinner slab??
It was made by a cranky old man named Mack Ronk he lives at White Deer Landing...he was cranky but a very fine fellow...he would do anything to help you...I can tell you this there was a ton of fish caught on his slabs and the paint looked as good after two hundred fish as it did the first one!!

Be careful VIP you might get black balled on the forum for not being a moe's tackle zealot. Or worse yet if you actually claim to have caught a fish on something that didn't come from moe's you will probably get chased of the area lakes for speaking  blasphemy.

Now to answer your question.

September and October - DD-22's shad colors, lower lake humps about 14' + or -, let them bump the top of the humps. You will get hit as they leave the bottom as you pass the hump.

April and May - same pattern but mid lake and use chartreuse colors.

In both cases use bright red's before sunup and after sundown.

June, July, and August - number 14 pet spoons, chrome on bright days, gold on dark days. Drop them to the thermocline (+ - 30') and hit around and between deep water humps that come up shallow.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. There have been a lot of good lure makers and retailers on this forum over the years. I don't recall anyone getting kicked to the curb for mentioning any brand or retailer on this forum nor has anyone been bounced for saying positive things about forum members or lure providers.

Most of the folks that aren't here anymore were people that enjoyed bringing other people or their endevours in the business world down.

Sorry everybody, I was just tossin a funny out there cause moe has already broke the thread open with the link from Lewisville. In all seriousness, I use just a handful of baits year around. Now it's flukes on jig heads, later it will be sassy shad on jig heads, then big slabs and flutter spoons and tail spinners for schooling fish. One of them will work SOMETIME throughout the year. Colors vary and can change from day to day but those baits produce.

Is folks, the business, or end users?

I can think of one that isnt even on this forum anymore, but who would most be? Just curious. There were some very good folks that were involved with this tackle business that are no longer in this business for various reasons. You can go on and on with the fist pumps but bringing the business world down, come on...really. This is a cut throat business, I got to see it in full force smile bring the business world down....lol please.

Looking back at my post it is very harsh. For that I apologize.  I have no favorite tackle supplyer and have some stuff from moe's and many others. It's just that when someone asks for real help the few that really try to give good advice are often drowned out buy guys saying moe's, moe's, moe's, without giving any reason, how, or why.

The trolling bashing from some of the same people rub me the wrong way sometimes. A rude fisherman is a rude fisherman no matter how he does it. The same for a good guy.  I was  rude today and am sorry that I took myself down to the level of those of whom I speak.

Just so everyone knows I have received pm's both for and against my original post. So there are some out there that both agree with it and those that don't.

Back on topic. Spring time sandbass. Wind blown long slow sloping points going from deep water to nothing. With a sandy bottom and preferably a small piece of cover, like a stump or two or a sand filled five gallon bucket.

I like a 1oz tail spinner with a white body, chartruse back, and chrome hammered Colorado blade.

Anchor up wind in open water far away. Cast as far as you can. Keep letting out anchor line until you can reach the fish that may be near the cover or shore and may be in very shallow water. Huge numbers of fish a day can be cought this way.

The ideal spot I described often does not exist. Just look for a the spot that gets closest to it and there is a good chance that fish will be there. Sometimes in less than a foot of water.

As a fisherman, I'll use what I have confidence in and what is working at the time. As far as the lure wars, I try not to get caught up in all that because I have used them all and they all work and are quality products. I do have my favorites but that is usually because of the guys behind the lures and the service they provide. RSR Lures helped out the LLFC with our tournament and gave the members free lures and special pricing. Great Guys. Moe's (Superduck) was at our first meeting and also passed out free lures and posted the seasonal guide for our members. Another Great Guy. We plan on inviting out other lure suppliers so our members can get exposed to them as well. Let them make up their mind as to their preferences and who they want to spend their money with. The point is that they all have good products with good pricing and great service and that is what I look for when I pull out the wallet. As far as the pot shots, it does seem trivial and has turned me off at times. If you like their products and service, buy from them but there is no real reason to disparage the other guys. Everyone is just trying to make a honest living and what I care about is that I have good gear so I can put some fish in the boat (and I need all the help I can get). Now back to learning 'how to catch more fish' which is why I watch this site.

BTW - if you are a lure/tackle supplier and would like to be at one of our meetings, send me an email at bluenitrotff@yahoo.com because we will be starting our monthly meetings again in March.

Bryan, you should know that I wasn't talking about any lure guys or retailers, I'm sure you can remember the few that jumped on lure makers and guides that frequently posted on the forum. It is one thing to say buy this but quite another thing to say don't buy this. We had a few of those, they are gone now.

It is a cut-throat businees but most businesses are.

Well BlowGun I'm sorry I have promoted my company and guys on the TFF mention me? I work pretty hard to have a full line of Striper gear at BoxStore prices or better! Not gona take any bashing on TFF or any other forum.

I promote my stuff, don't bash others. If ya don't like it; tuff! Start your own tackle business. That's it for me on this thread! Too much drama?

Joe I sure do. My wife's family has had places at Tawakoni forever. I mentioned in another post to you the other day about her cousin Casey Kindle. Casey learned way back from the old boys how to fish that lake before good electronics and all. Casey's Mom still has a nice place not far from White Deer. But Casey knew those guys that made those slabs and I used to buy them from Casey when I would visit down there....

Austin, I've posted a lot of tips since I've joined the Forum but will summarize. Been fishing Hubbard as long as I've been married- 30 years! My wife grew up on the lake and I learned from her Dad and all his good old boys. Some of the guys on the Forum have nicknamed me the Godfather but I still feel like a pup! For the longest time I've used what we all may know as the Mitchell slab. That slab was my go to slab on Hubbard year round. Now not to jump on the Moe bandwagon but I asked Moe about a year ago for a Mitchell look alike slab. Moe got them in last summer and the rest is history. That slab (all sizes) just flat out catches. You may remember from other posts I put black dots like a shad has on both sides of the slab. I also tie tails on thanks to Todd. I also use a small piece of artificial bait on one of treble hooks in the summer. In the winter deadstick with 1oz. slab or plastic. Spring 1-1/2 oz. Godfather slab. Spring work the slab slower up a few cranks. Flutter it back down using your thumb as a "brake." Summer smoke a 2 oz. Godfather up and down fast for the hybrids. I use sassy shads at times in the Spring but 90% of the time it's that Godfather. I have a spreadsheet with years and years of data with dates, times, presentation, lure etc. Hands down it's the Godfather slab on Hubbard. Happy Fishing!

This is a pull down tab from top of site:

Lure Chart

Should cover it!

Very nice, but I would move the wake baits up a notch.
They can be very effective in late March , all of April.

I'll throw in a tail spinner ( Fast alley from MOE's) during the spring and fall when the water is 65 to 70 degrees on points up where it is shallow ( 1 to 6 feet deep ) and get a sandy every time.. They are also good for the early summer topwater action. smile

Most of you know I throw a slab nearly all year and catch fish on them. Do use a tail spinner if they are surfacing or a top water chugger or such. Lotz of ways to catch them and we all use what we have confidence in.

Good chart Mike. I will be the first to admit I am not the best at using the soft plastics as much as needed but have done better over the past year in that regard, and look to experiment and gain confidence with the sassy and coho this year.

Up here in SW Oklahoma one of the techniques we do in the spring like Mar April is throw flukes, sassy, or coho's shallow. But when the big hybrids are on the prowl throw bigger sassy's or Bomber Long A's the ones that are about 6 inches long. Throw them in stickups very shallow like less than 2 ft, as the water warms we may even throw the pencil popper or salt water chug bugs. Usually around end of May I start slabbing smaller slabs match hatch, this could be 3/8oz with spinning tackle for sandies on up to a 1oz. June 1 to 2oz depending on the wind. Dont use a 1oz that doesnt stay down dont be scared, those fish are not scared of slabs up to 3oz's, you the non confident one is. July, I leave those slabs less than 1.5oz at home. I start using some big stuff like TNT 180's 2.5oz they are big, they flutter very good for a big bait. Throw them around the humps, on the flats around drop offs. If you are targeting big hybrids you cant always get them under the boat, you gotta throw for them. I like long skinny baits in 2oz to 2.5oz as well. Feeding hybrids push big shad, when you see this throw big baits. I have caught them on 5 in sassy's then as well, but just have a better feel for slabs preference. August see July, September about the same, October I keep using slabs but start going back down in size dependant on wind. Nov up here I started deadsticking, and slowly working slabs off the bottom slow. December deadsticking flukes, new to this so not alot of help. 1oz heads roundball, flukes pearl, glow, char, dip the garlic stuff, the stuff Moe's sells I can smell from the back to the front of my 20ft pontoon, great stuff.

We all have our own favorite brands etc. Once you know the technique you can catch on just about any slab...some may perform better on one day vs another day. There is no magic bait, if you believe there is...well... smile Confidence is where its at.

The rest is off topic...but I cant lie some people on here dont have a clue.

Where to get this stuff? Whenever the big box stores start posting reports, offering donations to TFF tourneys and events, you guys let me know...especially when they are catering to the sand bass and hybrids section.

I will let the pissing contest be for anyone else wanting to get into lure wars. As far as I can see over the years, hopefully not missing anyone these guys have provided there time and efforts to this forum as a whole in no particular order.

Humdinger Lures
Moe's Tackle
Fly's by Night
RSR Slabs
TNT Slabs
Ole Ugly's Slabs and flies

Let me just add, not one of these companies is getting rich off selling tackle. Some are doing better then others etc...but whenever someone gives you free stuff you should support them. That free stuff can also be knowledge....no different then what the guides on here provide. Go to the big box, let the store associate help you out and see if they know every product they sell, you find one let me know about that as well. Just my $.02, sorry guys I tend to get long winded, but if it helps someone out it was worth it.

Thanks for the pm as well, and the clarifying, yep those where the good ole days. I have quite a few grey hairs from back then.

Don't freak out Bryan, I agree with ya! This thread got off topic due to me. Sorry about that, but I'm not gona sit back and be a nice guy when members take potshots! As FastGuy said, the TFF had some guys years back that had 1 agenda, to mess with Tackle Guys?

That stuff is over and I'm glad! Support all the companies listed by Bryan, they make good stuff and support TFF.

Joe I can remember going out with Casey in an aluminum boat and catching huge stripers way back. I told Matt recently that Casey's Grandfather took us out several times to what he called the "Bubbling Tree." It was an area where there was an artisan like well (spring water from the floor of the Sabine River that broke through). We would fish by that thing and catch every kind of fish in the summer since the water was "oxygenated." It was a site to see. The trees around it eventually fell down and I'm not sure if Casey ever found it again.

I usually don't waste my time looking at these kind of threads, but let me say there are some great guys on here that make quality fishing lures. You should check them out. You should check out Moe too, he seems to provide a bunch of different types of lures.

Okay time for me to chime in fools! banana

I was seriously looking for info on WHAT lures to use WHEN. Not WHOSE.

I see a lot of pictures of lures and I have no idea how to use them, when to use them ,etc. so I thought something like this would educate me! Moe's list was very helpful. It is interesting the different lure selections and the way they are used depending on the time of the year. I was just looking for a breakdown of how, when and what to use during different seasons.

I have gotten quite a few PM's regarding this post. rolfmao
Guys - those who know me know I could care less that this thread went south! Shoot, usually it is me who is the thread killer. thumb

VIP you didnt do anything wrong. Just some post go south, they always do with lures. Your question was good and I cant tell you how much I have learned by asking questions on here, or just reading peoples posts. I hate to sound like a know it all, but you know it doesnt take a brain surgeon to catch sand bass...now hybrids on the other hand you think you got it dialed in go out smoke them, tell your buddies and take them out and sometimes it works out, other times, well should have been here yesterday.
