If YOU Could IMPROVE any of the City of Denton Community Fishing Lakes what would you do?
South Lakes Hobson Pond - Trout Pound on Neighborhood Fishing Program South Lakes Londonderry Pond - behind Metzler's and McMath Middle School North Lakes - Bonnie Brae Pond North Lakes - Windsor Pond Lake Forest Pond - Ryan Road behind Good Sam Monticeto Pond Cross Timbers Park in neighborhood north of Monticeto at Hickory Creek
My name is Jim. Reply on the string, PM me, call my office at 940-349-7465. I would like to improve these ponds in the next few months but I need user input to have the most effect. Also we have a 501c3 called Fishing Friends if anyone would like to donate toward that goal not trying to solicit for $ really need the info but I figured I would throw it out there to cover all my bases. If you ever thought "Well, if they'da ask me I'd told 'em ............ instead of what they ended up doing." Well, I'm asking.

I will start this rolling.
Keep the grass cut low around the edges of the ponds.
Tall grass freaks people out.
Bank fishermen want easy access.
Windsor Pond is a perfect example.

I agree with FFM. Add some brush piles to some of the ponds. Most of them have no structure at all.

I wonder if there is any cost effective strategy to clear up the water at the trout pond? Perhaps if there was an intermediary pond that allowed the silt to settle out or something.
I like a mix of tall and low grass. Weeds keep the fishing good but it's nice to have a well mowed path to fish from too.

Ponds with deep water off the damns should have big brush piles in them, give the fish a place to go in the winter and hot of the summer.
I would be happy to put them in for you.
Sink them so that you can float a bobber 4' deep over them.
They have to be marked so folks who fish for cat fish won't get hung up.

Good input and thanks but keep them coming.
On the water quaility and clarity at Hobson Pond, the Trout pond at South Lakes we are negotiating for a grant to fund a Best Management Practice Control for the inflow of the pond comming in that essentially will do what you described it is somewhat of a filter garden that will allow some of the suspended clay particles that come in during a significant rain basically it is varing types of plants and rocks that will allow the clear up of the inflow of water and the clay solids in suspension already in the pond will eventually fall out / dilllute with additional rain and move downstream to fallout in the heavily vegetated creek channel. And yes, lots of folks do not know that ponds 75 acres or smaller within the confines of a public park located within the incorporated city limits of a municipality are categorized as Community Fishing Lakes and have specific regulations and harvest limits. TPWD Outdoor Annual 2011-2012 pg32, 37-41. Probably be worthwhile to brush up on these pages prior to leaving with more than 5 fish per angler. Might get pricey and not be the experience anyone wants to leave with. I want folks to have the best experience they can and leave (after picking up their waste) happier than they figured they would when they pulled in. Nobody is smarter than everybody so I appreciate any feedback you folks can give me. Thanks

For white and black crappie, their hybrids and subspecies, minimum length limit = 10 inches. Daily bag limit = 25 in any combination.
I don't think that's true in Denton.

If you take 25 crappie a day out of a small pond you will wipe out the population in one season.
Certainly all the bigger ones.

Hey, I am not an enforcement guy I am an operations guy. If one of our links is inconclusive I will work on getting that fixed also link or no link grab a paper copy of the reference and check out those pages and as stated I will be the first to admit of not being right all the time and I don't know if a misdirected link is a good defense of prosecution if you pick up a ticket. Back to what I want to focus on is improving the quality of the 56 acres of lakes we have. We participate in the TPWD Neighborhood Fishing Program and get stockings based on TPWD's recommendations every 2 weeks at Hobson Pond. Monticeto Pond had a population of inferior bullnose catfish and we stocked it with channel catfish and hybrid coppernose bluegill about 3 years ago. The rest are moderately balanced for recreational fishing but my goal is improving them to the point kids put the xbox controller down grab a Zebco and some jigs and fish. I don't see enough of the next generation fishing and it concerns me. There is no real way to reach my customer base except through groups like this. I want to get angler input but can't get the word out to even set up a public meeting to sit and discuss business. So, I'm asking for your ideas, criticism, comments, attaboys, why the heck do you guys at the city do ...... input, and basically ideas on making your lakes better for all of you.

Also, feeders what do you folks think about them? Gaudy waste of money? Important resource for forage fish? Place for folks with nets to pull fish out of the pond once the fish get trained to eat by the feeder? Or a good deal that improves overall fish quality?
Structure elements like submerged trees crappie condos 10 inch pipe sealed on one end for catfish habitat or any other structure?
Vegetation pros and cons - how much is too much? Species to use / avoid.
Forage fish talipia / shad?

I can't say I know much on pond maintenance and fish feeding. Those question might be better asked in this section of the forum. http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/forums/20/1/Ponds_Tanks_Private_WatersSome things I thought of to improve them- More fishing pears. We only have two and the one at Hobson is really only a deck on the bank. Little kids do better from a wood deck than sitting on the bank. More extending out over water would be good and it provides structure. Our ponds aren't the best for bank fishing. North Lake South is too shallow too far out and gets overgrown. Forest park is limited and I never know if I'm tresspassing on Good Sam or not. Those two are better from a small boat or kayak. North lakes and South lakes as far as I can tell are nothing but shallow bowls. Nothing to cast at for fish. No or very limited structure, Drop offs, and channels. No place for them to hide and grow big. You think we got side tracked on the stocking and bag limits but to improve the fishing it is needed. Most fish are undersize due to over fishing and no habitat for growth and reprodutction. Pretty much the only good pond for catching something to eat is Hobson for catfish or trout. Thats because they are stocked every two weeks. Crappie I dont believe have a chance of getting big enough to eat. The ones that do are taken pretty quick. I think structure and a stocking program will improve them greatly. Seems the ponds in Denton had been made for a function and not fishing. North lakes for soil conservation. South lakes and Monticelo for flood control or to look good in a park. Lake Forest most likely was the Ryans damming up a creek to feed cattle. Not sure any had been made with fishing mind. Or they were not desinged by somebody with fish knowledge.

You are correct all of the ponds we currently have are flood control retention ponds made to accept drainage in instances where we have significant rainfall and release it at a controlled rate. Channels are present in both North Lakes Park structures though not how I would have wished that they be designed, kinda narrow but you are right they were not designed as recreational lakes as a prime component of their use but they sure are handy when we get rains in excess of 5 inches per hour and they get BIG fast. Docks - great idea love to get some more of you folks together for a public meeting to sit and discuss how to make the best of what I have and get your point of view as we move forward. Docks mean alot of different things to different people and I agree the one at Hobson Pond is a little smaller than dinky even for a small pond like that and it needs needs about 20% of the decking re-skinned. I am not all that thrilled about the one at North Lakes either. There are no real best management practices for public opinion and I am a guy with 125,000 bosses that wants to do a good job and have some lakes we can be proud of. Even if 80% of folks like what we do there are still 25,000 people that may take exception to it, so a fella has to ask around and do a little research and finding random fishermen to give you the straight scoop is a little hard cause when I approach folks they react like I am going to give them a citation which I do not have nor want to have the authority to do. With the right input and some decision making and a 50 foot long stick trackhoe a fellow could still pull these items off and make these improvements.
Keep the ideas coming folks and I apologize if I tend to use the word guys too frequently. Don't mean too don't mean anything by it my wife can outfish most men I know, self included.

I like the idea of getting kids hooked on fishing.
Kids like action and they like docks out on the water. Even if its not far out. Lay out a dock with some nice brush around it, or better yet PVC type fish attractors (less snags) and let the kids do work on some sunfish.
This would also help to serve the handicapped and older folks (like fish fear me) Could be federal grant money for that type of project under the ADA act? Just an idea...

I would have to agree with you on that. They are quick to respond and through addressing the information from the complaintant. From LBJ Grasslands to Lake Ray Roberts to Haggerman, I have been very impressed with all enforcement officers in this region. They are your fish don't just watch someone take them from you.

I like this one better, take the pvc pipe all the way to the ground making it look like a giant spider. Folks who bottom fish can deal with this set up, they wouldn't get hung up like they would with brush piles.

man those trout are small this year.. I guess they haven't ever been real big at the South Lake stockings..
I got spoiled by hitting river park a few years ago. We caught and kept our 10 fish limit with 3 of them being over 20".

I am still interested in hearing from the folks that fish the ponds in Denton so I can hopefully include your feedback in any improvements we make. Would any of you be interested in meeting with me for a public meeting at my office or at the Civic Center in the next few weeks? I would like to hear from my end customers that use the lakes. Please feel free to contact me so we can see about setting a meeting up. How about some time near the end of next week?

Fished So Lks, Hobson lake, this morning. I caught one trout about 8.5 in. and the stinkin' water turkeys caught/ate more 15 in the two hours I was there. If they take approx 20 in a.m. and 20 in p.m. (this is most likely an under-estamation) that's 40+ per day. If the release yesterday, Feb 9, was 1,000, by the next release date they will have taken 560+ trout. Doesn't leave many for us humans.
I would like to have larger trout released as most of them now are "what can I stuff this trout into" as opposed to "what can we stuff into the trout" for cooking, eating.

Good point Don't know if the stats would true up like that on a daily basis but point made. The specification is usually for a 10 to 12 inch trout. Will check on what's being delivered and get back to you. Pm me your phone # or leave me a message at my office. Feedback on improvements I need to make are what I am looking for. It doesn't make me smile but will help us deliver a better product. Thanks Jim

I took this information from another thread and posted it here just to make sure eveyone has chance to read it.
I am trying to book one of our meeting rooms for around the 13th so any folks that want to meet to give input to improvements at North Lakes Bonnie Brae Pond or any other of our Community Fishing Lakes can meet and discuss things that would improve the fishing out there. Looking at the possibility of having the meeting at the Civic Center Front Community room and having some av aerial pictures of the lakes and plans on what would be best suited where. Things like fish attractors, additional stockings, preferred species, forage fish, possibility of a fishing peir and its location and what ever else that the public feels we can improve on. Tenatively looking at Tuesday March 13 at 5:30 pm but I am waiting to here back on a possible rental that may move the date. If that date is good for folks and we cannot make it at that location we could always use the conference room here at my office at 601 e Hickory. I always like to get input from my user groups before changing anything because the last thing I want to do is ruin someone's perfect spot or have them say, "If you had ask me I would have said do....." I want to make the lakes better for everyone and I could use your help and ideas. Jim

I posted these signs at North Lakes Bonnie Brae Pond yesterday. I would greatly appreciate any input that anyone might have regarding ways to make this a better recreational fishery:
The City of Denton Parks and Recreation Department is proposing improvements to North Lakes Park Bonnie Brae Pond. Proposed improvements include accessibility to the lake, location of a fishing pier, and enhancements to improve fishing opportunities.
A public meeting will be held to receive comments from the public on Tuesday, March 13 at 5:30 pm in the Civic Center, located at 321 E. McKinney St.
Comments and questions may also be Directed to Parks Planning Superintendent Jim Mays at (940) 349-7465 or via email at parksnrec@cityofdenton.com

Purty Your gonna love some of the fish attractors the guys made while it was raining and they came in to clean the yard. NICE. Best Parks crew in the Area! DFW Metroplex Parks Rodeo Champs 4 years out of the last 10 and
Had Two guys place 1st in the State Competition in Austin in Irrigation Assembly
One of my folks placed second in the State Mower obstacle Competition
and a third employee placed Third in the Horticultural competition in Austin all this last week.
Best Parks crew overall in the 26 area city DFW region and 3rd place overall in the State Competition.
Best group of folks I have had the pleasure to work with in the last 27 years of working in the green industry. I am very proud of my team and my community.

I appreciate any help you can give me on the picture posting front. I was trying to figure that out and help put the kids to bed and all I was really doing was remembering how to cuss..... Bad Plan. I was probably skipping some step that is explained real well in the directions but I wasn't making it work.
Thanks!

You and your men did a heck of a job building them Jim.
Now all we got to do is wait for the weather to warm up and have a fish attractor planing party with the bass hunter navy.

Awesome
Picture in front of the caboose with Large 88 inch tree spade in background:
The basket is an upside down 44 inch tree spade basket for a ball and burlap tree spade we had for our Bobcat when we participated in a tree rescue on some property prior to commercial development. The pipe is white 1/2 inch pvc that has photo-degraded and it was culled for use in our irrigation systems as being unsatisfactory to use. Either way both items were destined for the landfill so having a second life as a fish attractor seems like a good deal to me.
Basket will be saddled with concrete blocks for weight and will settle in the silt basin at North Lakes Bonnie Brae Pond creating an interrior basin for the fish to congregate. Mesh on basket is roughly 4"x4". Would be a great spot for a boater to periodically drop a half of a bag of range cubes to attract forage fish as it dispersed in the water. Just an idea.....

Heck Yeah! This is some of the things I want to talk about on Tuesday. Wish I could take credit for the ideas but it was all the guys. They are brilliant. It takes a team like that to make me look good. The Orange pipe is culled marker pipe we use on our post and cable fences to let the joggers know there is a wire 18 inches off the ground. Great example is from the Dog Park Parking Lot Fence. Culled pieces on the yard since 2006 ..... time to get rid of it or give it a second life. After it is in the water 3 months the algae will have it green anyway - who cares what color it is.

The 2 inch funny pipe is awesome it could house a bunch of bait fish in the 8 foot runs of 2 inch interrior diameter pipe. Awesome idea - again it was just made out of construction culls bound for the landfill.

And I have got to say that the 5 gallon bucket version that the crew did today has its own flair and I think they will do well for the needs we have. I am hoping to have an associate of mine allow my folks to borrow a towable unit that catalogs depth and gps data so I can get an accurate depth anaylsis of the entire lake so I will have a map that is more reflective of the bottom structure than the 1970ish and 1996 versions I have on file that lack the current trends in the silting in of the lake. This would be a good tool to have prior to dropping in the structures. If this works out I would like to do the same at my other locations.
Also I want to talk about areators, accessibility to the lake, feeders, angler input on restocking vs input some folks have given me about feeders and feeder placement and the possibility of and location of a pier. Additionally amount of fish attractors, placement, a drop day where we can have folks out to drop structure and catalog location along with an opportunity for folks to find out more about our 501c3 Park Foundation account for Fishing Improvements should anyone wish to donate toward the improvements of our lakes or participate in our stocking programs. We have a lot of luck in the community with user groups participating in cost sharing.....the disc golf folks at the same location have leveraged $30,000 toward improvements with corporate and individual donations and have really gotten a plan to turn that course into a regional destination. I am not trying to pass the plate. These are improvements that are going to be made but I always like to give folks the opportunity. Not a pitch just an option. I look forward to meeting with anyone that has time on Tuesday to come out to the meeting if not please give me call at 940-349-7465 or email me at jim.mays@cityofdenton.com Fish Fear Me - Thanks for covering up my lack of technical picture linking ability! I apprecate you tons! Let's go fishing.

Thanks!! That makes me feel great when folks say that! That program is the best value of any expense in my budget. Rafe Brock with TPWD blessed us with that opportunity and through his tireless efforts along with some of the top notch folks that the state has such as Tom Hungerford and others we have been able to provide recreational fishing opportunities that are of such high quality - heck even I catch fish out there. The catfish stockings are gearing up as the trout season fades so comming up soon the biweekly catfish stockings will be starting up again. So, get the chicken liver and the pole ready and have somebody at home make sure you have corn meal and peanut oil along with a few taters to fry up along side your catch. Dang....... I'm hungry now. To bad the park closes at 10 or I'd meet you there. Jim

I missed the cost question. The South Lakes Program is a state program that is based on a formula that I would make more sense telling people verbally. I am just very fortunate to have great folks representing me to allow our participation in the program. I honestly feel that the value divided by the cost is the best purchase I make all year. Not only do I get the materials, technical support, delivery, and a host of great publicity from literature, posters, billboards, signs, wooden kiosks that show the fish targeted along with numbers for folks to call to report poaching, periodic radio show on site appearances, and website links to and from the TPWD site, locations and support for local charity fundraisers and a location for outings for groups such as those that focus on disabled children, disadvantaged youth, new anglers, fly fishing groups and just a chance for plain old folks to go fishing. Honestly in consideration of all of that it is worth a bunch more than what I pay for it in my book. There are a bunch of positive memories made on that little 5 acre tract and I am more than proud to be part of it.
On stocking ponds in general there are a lot of variables. The type of predator is usually bass or crappie Existing conditions of the pond / vegetation / water quality / depth / size of pond/ depth pond..... amount and quality of forage fish existing and variety of adult predator species in the water (are there any 25 pound carp, 30+ pound gar, 45# blue catfish or 15# bass) these through off even the most calculated guess. What type of fishery do you want - bluegill pond, catfish hole, crappie pond, or bass pond. Lots of different variables and lots of different plans Time vs money For a small spot like Monticeto pond for bluegill and catfish you can get something going for as little as $400 to $600 every 3 to 5 years. For larger locations with more pressure much more.

All the PARD has at Unicorn Lake is the concrete trail, a trail easement, and the lighting. The lake was not conveyed to the City of Denton.

Me too I have seen a copy of the uw topos. If I ever get the chance I know just where I'm casting. It would be a fun place to decompress after a bad day. Beer and a burger ay the Pour House then pick the rod and box out of the truck and fish a few hours.

My two cents is just props to you guys getting together and making some stuff happen grass roots style that will improve the quality of life for folks in your fair town!
If you need help sinking those fish structures or anything else let me know.
As this seems to be an ongoing project, it will have to be if its too work... I would suggest next christmas ask folks to dontate their old live christmas trees and we can sink those. I know they only last 2-3 years but they are great for that time frame and are totally free!
If you did it each year on some key places you can make some killer crappie/sunfish/bass holes.

I attended the meeting and am happy to say that Jim has some great ideas. Jim said that many of you have sent him emails and that it has helped him greatly in the planning for all our ponds here in Denton.

I greatly appreciate the folks comming out to the meeting this evening. Public input in the form of meeting attendance, emails, and opinions gathered by random sampling and customer contacts give me the backup needed in order to substantiate expanding the community fishing program here in Denton. I would greatly appreciate any additional feedback that any of you have regarding our lakes here. Good, Bad, Positive, or Negative that is the stuff I need to hear in order for our program to expand. Please feel free to contact me at my office at 940-349-7465 or email me at: jim.mays@cityofdenton.com Thanks for all of your support,
Jim Mays

I spent the day with Jim Mays the Superintendent of the city of Denton's Parks and Recreation and Brad Metzler, a Fisheries Biologist from Pond King. Brad brought his shock boat and we hit all the Denton public ponds. I learned alot today. Here are a few pics of Pond Kings shock boat.

If you have never seen this done before it's pretty cool. They use long handled dip nets and scoop up the stunned fish and put them in this aerated tank.

They shocked the fish and then came back to shore and showed Jim and I what they found. Brad would break down what he found, what kind of fish they found and why the fish were the size they were. He is going to give Jim a full report later this week so he can decide what kind of fishery he wants for the public.

That was very educational Brad and Wes did a fantastic job out there today. I learned more talking to them in one afternoon than I have in the last 6 years studying everything I can get my hands on by myself. The folks out at Pond King had their work cut out for them today and they significantly exceeded my expectations. I learned I have a lot of work to get me where I want the ponds to be but with Brad's help I will hopefully have a roadmap to success.
OUTSTANDING JOB GENTLEMEN. I AM VERY APPRECIATIVE OF YOUR EFFORTS!
Fish Fear Me thanks for your insight your assistance was greatly appreciated.

You know Tracy it is a real shame you didn't take the time to come to the public meetings. I am sure Jim Mays would have loved to have heard about your passion for catching big carp.
You were invited just like everyone else.
Maybe next time ...
