Anyone ever give White Rock Lake a shot for LMB during the winter and have any luck? If so, what part of the lake and what rig did you use? My theory is that without a boat, I can’t get the lure out far enough to get to the next depth i.e. from the 2-5ft depth to the 6-10ft. or deeper. I know the fish are out there because I had a heck of run before it got cold, and since WRL is shallow there can’t be all that many places for them to go.

I figured this comes up every now and again but I searched TFF and didn’t get anything useful so I figured I post it up again.

And yup, it’s my first year to take fishing further than a live worm and bobber. WRL is the closes place to practice, but after throwing up 100 free throws without any coaching it would be nice up my odds and make one.

Thanks

They would be behind the dam in the deepest part of the water.

I hooked one nice size LMB last weekend using jighead with tube. I used to use jig wakky or texas-wakky. They worked pretty well.

Where? If you don't mind me asking. Up in the creek? East side or West Side of the main lake?

Both creeks can be good during the winter, but difficult to fish from the bank. As you have to flip the tree roots along the bank, either a jig and craw or a small spinnerbait with colorado blades work. I have caught bass well north of buckner bridge in Dixon Branch and well north of the crappie bends in WRC during winter months.

At the lake look for banks with alot of chucky rocks and /or concrete along the shoreline work a jig/pig slowly, the bank from the garland road entrance to the first curve can be good during the winter.

This lake has frustrated me beyond end. From the bank and from a boat. The fish I do catch tend to be on smaller baits, jigs and spinnerbaits. With the warmer winter, I imagine the fish may be shallower than normal, especially this coming weekend w the forecast. I've had some success pitching to cat tails in the spring so may want to look there. The cove by the dog park has been best for me and I think it has the most cover for fish. The bank by the dam also holds fish, but its tough walking..

I have had luck at the pedestrian bridge by the boat house and also the pump station. All of the fish I have caught there have been on a YUM F2 vibra king tube.

I don't have a boat but look forward to trying the dam this spring if I can find a good used jon boat online.

I have only fished WRL a handful of times and so far it seems to be a tough nut to crack for sure. They are in there though. I bet the isolated cove by the boathouse is a honey hole during the spawn if you can get to it!

It was west side of main lake next to old boat house.
I fished on east side as well, but the water level was too low to fish.

Call me crazy but this works for me. If you are familiar with this lake fish the areas where there are rocks. During the warmer days I have found fish near or in the rocks. Also, murky water warms faster, I caught some in the 2-3ft depth range this last week.

I tried the point right off the dog park with swim jig and spinner and pretty much succeeded in snagging and loseing everything. I'll go back to the old boat house an fish the rocks up and down that bank with a Texas rig and see if they will take a worm.

Visiting the Dallas area this week and decided to try my luck at the local lakes. We have been to several the past couple of days. So far the only luck I have had was at White Rock Lake. Fished near the boathouse, the walking bridge, the pumphouse and the spillway. Caught these 2 on a spinnerbait near the spill way.

Welcome to Dallas. Those are good looking fish. Gives me hope and just tells me to be more patient.

Went there briefly this morning thinking I would be able to fish a little. Well it's like fishing in chocolate milk. The water came up so high that most of the bike/jogging trails are covered in debris.

I was WR lake last night. It was OK but cold and muddy. I didn't have any luck. I'll try this weekend again.

Water is still Mocha; Creek and main lake. This one is going to be 5-6 days before things get respectable. And then it will rain again. Hope this does what the pro's say it will do and make the fishing even that much better in the spawn.

When I drove by the was still quite a bit of water going over the spillway.

If the weather continues being on the warmer side (unlike last year with snow and ice) in about 2-3weeks it will be time for long casts and a carolina rig.

Want to have some fun? Reddish/orange Rattletrap. Make sure to post your pics! Not a lot or big but they are there.

Went out for a couple hours on Friday and 5 bass were caught. All except 1 was very small and no color to them at all. We are talking about 8inches and less. All were from long casts. Plastics and crankbaits were used. Rain turned the lake brown again with quite a bit of water going over the spillway.

I didn't want to post becuase I struck out my last outting. The front was rolling in, it was about 5p, a little windy but I was thinking conditions were right. I ironcally was thinking, "I just can't get it out far enough". At the old boat docks. What is considered a long cast and what type of reel? I am using spinner reel with 10lb mono. Should I use something else to get the distance. Man I feel like I am on the golf course and that frustration was why I took up fishing. wink

FYI If you look at the pic by our IL vistor that bottle in the water is still there in the same place. It must be tied to something.

How long is your pole (no homo)? and how old is ur line? how heavy was the lure u were throwing? does ur spinning reel match ur pole? it could be alot of things bro.

Bass is pretty hard right now on the lakes (from the banks). Spring time should be good, if the temps stay warm, springtime will be here in no time! Let me know if you need a partner to fish White Rock with, give me a holla.

I am fishing in areas where I know the water is deeper, by my best guess it's approx 6-8 ft range. I was using a Shimano Curado reel w/ 12 lb line on a 6ft 8in rod. This reel is tuned with the brakes off for extra distance.

I only fish the old boat dock area a couple of times a year. To much silt in that area for me and very shallow.

Since WRL has little bottom "structure" so there is no distinct vertical ledge for the fish to migrate up and down during winter. you can still find alot fish along the banks, working a jig or creature type soft plastic along the chunk rock slowly.

they also migrate up both creeks during winter following the shad and crappie. if you know where the deep bends are you can find some bass, some days they will be upstream of the deeper areas and on others they will be downstream. there are sections of the creeks that are almost as deep as the area in front of the dam. if you can, pitch a lure into the shoreline tree roots.

bassfishindude, fish the shoreline from garland road to whinfrey point

Well I am heading in the right direction anyway. I use a shamano 6 8 combo and the line is about 4 mon old. I have fished Garland to Winfrey and when I say boathouse I mean the area right as the cove starts then heading north (which was nuts in Oct and I expect will be again in March). I have even fished side of the creek that you go in on from the dog park so I could pitch into lay downs on that side. That was a B..... and I won't do that again. I have thrown everything from 1/8 to 3/8. Worms and spinners jigs. I won't do cranks because they will just get lost.

Winter fishing is just hard. I'll keep plugging. Can't catch anything until you got a hook in the water.

I usually fish this area. I'm a big fan of the cove right before Winfrey Point hitting the cattails hard. It will start picking up in 2-3 weeks. I better get all my rest in now because between work, fishing, and home life there's no time for sleep. Last year I made myself sick during a span of 6 weeks of only getting 5-6 hours of sleep per day.

Speaking of no structure, the Dallas Parks Dept. has been cleaning up the shoreline again by wading into the water and pulling logs out with chains. One good rain will change all their work but, this messes up the things that I made mental notes on.

If you want more distance, get a bait caster..spinning reels suck imo unless your plannin on sittin on the cooler and waiting for catfish

I went out this past weekend and I can cast a plastic worm, 2oz bullet weight about 100+ft

with the drag kinda high and the brakes on 8

plus it allows for superior accuracy compared to those durn spinning reels..
